A new promotional video titled “Only Slightly Exaggerated” was aired in cities of Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Phoenix through the use of television, theaters, and digitally to help attract tourists to Oregon. When asked the thought process on creating a Studio Ghibli/Japanese anime inspired video, Nick Stokes from Wieden+Kentucky responded with the following:
“We thought Oregon deserved better than just another travel ad,” said Wieden+Kennedy agency art director Nick Stokes. “So we turned to animation to try and capture its magic. We’re very proud of the work, and I’m honored to represent my home state in such a unique way.”
Additional promotions will utilize the animation throughout the year. While the animation was done very well, and definitely has that anime-inspired touch to it, older tourists may question the direction of the video to be more of an animated show than a place to visit. Safe for the younger generation especially those starting their families and growing up with Disney and Studio Ghibli, the video is not only entertaining but also interesting to learn more about Oregon.
The video was written and produced by Wieden+Kentucky, animation created by Psyop and Sun Creature Studio, and the original score performed by the Oregon Symphony. You can watch the video below and hopefully someday we can all ride on that giant rabbit through a field of flowers.
