Warner Bros. is bringing back ThunderCats to Cartoon Network and it looks…. different.
Max Mittelman (Justice League Action) will voice as Lion-O and Wilykat, Erica Lindbeck (DC Super Hero Girls) as Cheetara and Wilykit, Patrick Seitz (Justice League Action) as Tygra and Mumm-Ra, and Chris Jai Alex (Star Wars: Battlefront II) as Panthro. For those unfamiliar with the ThunderCats series, it follows the adventures of Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, Snarf, and WilyKit and WilyKat, refugees of the planet Thundera who end up on Third Earth as they battle Mumm-Ra and many enemies. ThunderCats originally aired from 1985 and 1989. There’s also been a reboot that only lasted one season, 26 episodes in 2011. Now with this new one, titled ThunderCats Roar will take the series in a more comical approach.
Out of all the shows that has been released on Cartoon Network for the last decade, such as Adventure Time, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven Universe, they sure are keeping the design and animation very simple and clean. I’ve enjoyed the series for decades and while I’m all-in for trying new things, feeling skeptical on how ThunderCats Roar will do. Taking a franchise like ThunderCats is going to be an uphill battle to win long-time fans, especially those fans who have kids of their own. Hopefully it will do well enough to go for additional seasons.
ThunderCats Roar will debut in 2019 on Cartoon Network.
