Many arcade-style games are shoot to kill, but the Gal*Gun series is the total opposite. You either shoot to give female characters enough pleasure so they stop pestering you or you shoot to remove the demons attached to them. It’s endlessly amusing, but it’s also a game you’ll want to be wary of playing in public since it focuses heavily on the female body.

Gal*Gun 2, despite the numbering, is the series’ fourth installment, and in addition to appearing on the PlayStation 4 and PC, the franchise makes its way to a Nintendo console for the first time. Gal*Gun 2 is an entertaining arcade-style game for fans of the series or those who really enjoy attractive female characters in a fictional world.

Knight in Shining Armor

Similar to the previous main installment, Gal*Gun: Double Peace, Gal*Gun 2 puts the main character in a scenario where you must help an angel remove demons from your school. You’re given a set of gadgets for use: a Pheromone Gun, Pheromone Goggles, and a vacuum weapon called the Demon Sweeper.

The Pheromone Gun shoots bullets that are invisible to humans and only affects demons and possessed girls. Don’t worry about hurting anyone, though; the bullets only give pleasure on impact. When putting on the Pheromone Goggles, you’ll be able to see Risu, an angel who needs help removing the demons that plague the students and teachers in the school. With the Demon Sweeper, you can suck up the demons terrorizing the ladies, but if you use the vacuum too long, it’ll literally take the clothes off people instead. There is a limit on how long it will work and will recharge slowly when it reaches its limit, but it can be upgraded with more power. As a result, it’s best to use the Demon Sweeper only on demon-possessed waifus (attractive girls).

Players who have played Double Peace will notice the pace of Gal*Gun 2 is a little different. Instead of the game moving you through the stage automatically once all the ladies in the area are taken care of, Gal*Gun 2 gives the player the option to choose when to continue.

At first, this didn’t feel as arcade-like as the previous game because you weren’t being carried along at that faster pace. However, after playing a few stages, being able to choose when to move on gives you a chance to take a breather from the action. Plus, it allows you to search for hidden items such health replenishments and mini demon statues, so it’s a welcome change.

Be My Waifu

In between the shooting and sucking, you’ll have conversations with Chiru, the girl who lives next door to you, or Nanako, your childhood friend. Many of these scenes will give players options with which to answer, and which one you choose will determine the characters’ love for you. Your answers can also steer you into falling in love with other characters besides Chiru or Nanako, allowing for multiple endings that’ll give fans a reason to replay the game over and over again.

When you successfully unlock a character ending, the game will let you continue playing or start a new game with your save data. Typically, games with multiple endings will only have the latter option, so it’s great to see that you can still get some of the other endings without starting over. However, if you truly want to see all character endings the game offers, you’ll need to begin again.

This is due to the fact that additional missions appear on your to-do list as you complete each main event. While you are not required to finish these optional tasks, doing so will win you phone numbers from the ladies you help. You can then give them a call each day to meet, give them snacks, and slowly increase their love for you. It’s similar to a dating simulator game, albeit a shortened version of one.

So Much to Do in One Day

Players are given a certain amount of missions to play per day — sometimes two or three depending on the type. You can also call your lady friends at any time, and you can contact as many of them as you want, though it’ll take some time away from your day. Even so, you’ll still have time to at least do one mission before the day ends. That said, you only have a certain amount of in-game weeks to play, and afterward, the game ends and you’ll have to start again.

The goal in the game is not only to remove demons from the school but to also earn points. Getting enough points will help your angel friend look good at her job, and her celestial company will send a care package to your home when the day ends, mostly containing snacks for you to give to girls. The game will offer items to decorate your room.

Once you have received special endings for your characters, you can still play where you left off after watching the closing scenes, which is something many games don’t offer as they force you to start over if you skip to the end.

Doki Doki Mode

Doki Doki Mode, the one-on-one interaction with female characters, moves away from the mission-centric occurrences seen in Double Peace. Instead, players now enter the mode through special events with the main characters and the characters who gave you their phone numbers.

When in Doki Doki Mode, you are given a time limit to suck up enough demons for your “partner.” By shooting your Pheromone Gun at parts of your partner’s body, demons will swarm out, and it’s up to you to suck them up or shoot them down. Once time is up and you’ve managed to draw out enough demons, the character will fall deeper in love with you.

Because Doki Doki Mode is only used for special occasions rather than missions, missions are more focused on building stories between characters, helping classmates and teachers, and striving for higher scores.

Earn Your Items

In Gal*Gun 2, in order to upgrade weapons and get snacks and better accessories, you have to complete missions and achieve high scores. Then, at the end of each in-game day, you’ll obtain the items. While it’s commendable that the developers are doing something different from Double Peace, you certainly had an easier time upgrading equipment and getting items by purchasing them in that game’s store.

You’ll oftentimes find yourself overloading on snacks instead of upgrading your gear since you will need to move your conversations with characters further along in order to actually get the upgrades. Moreover, not all characters will give you the items what you want, so be prepared to make some moves with your ladies.

Something the game should have but doesn’t is the ability to unlock illustrations, 3D models, and videos in a gallery for viewing. Considering the fact that other games have this and the overall voyeuristic nature of this game in particular, the lack of one is surprising. The game does give you the option to change the clothes of students and teachers, but that’s about it. You can even buy additional costumes online, but if you are not seriously into waifus in skimpy outfits, they’re not worth it.

The Look of Love

While not expecting the game to have the best 3D models, they’re not the worst either. Character models are pretty bland, and at times, their color shades seem off-balance. For example, in the game’s homeroom class, Risu the angel looks more red-toned whereas Nanako doesn’t show any redness. In an outside setting, Risu’s color shade changes again, but it’s closer to the tone it should be when being under direct sunlight. In yet another instance, the color shades on Risu’s face even flickers! Overall, these visual oddities are a bit awkward, but they’re only minor distractions.

Fans who have played Gal*Gun: Double Peace will also recognize a familiar duo who will ask for your assistance. It’s great to see sequels receive crossover treatment, as if the developers are giving fans a treat for playing their games.

Gal*Gun 2

Summary

Gal*Gun 2 is an amusing first-person, arcade-style shooter that you can’t take seriously. Like many similar titles, each gaming session will provide solid entertainment for a few hours, but after that, players will want to put it down in favor of something else. That said, fans will come back to achieve 100% completion. If you are a player that is self-aware of others watching you, Gal*Gun 2 isn’t the type of game to play on a train, in the park, or even around your friends and relatives (unless they are into these games, too). For everyone else, have a Doki Doki good time!
