Dragon Ball Super: Broly has made a surprise in the box office since its debut in the United States. The animated movie made just over $7 million USD on its debut Wednesday, January 16th and was the #1 movie on Wednesday and Thursday. In addition, the Broly movie came out as #3 in the box office over the weekend, bringing in $10.6 million USD. The movie totaled just over $21 million USD over its five-day release. The surprising part, the movie released at approximately 1,233 theaters. Averaging at $8,640 USD per theater. Higher budget movies that were showcased the same weekend (Glass, The Upside, Aquaman) were shown at least twice as many theaters. That’s the power of the Dragon Ball fanbase.

The Dragon Ball movie now ranked #3 in anime films released in the United States, surpassing Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie. Pokemon‘s The First Movie and The Movie 2000 sit at the top two spots. Dragon Ball Super: Broly may not reach any of those two spots but coming at #3 with a small number of theater showings is impressive. Both Pokemon movies shown at least 2.7 thousand theaters.

The movie has brought in worldwide at $86.9 million USD, already surpassing its two previous films. Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F‘s worldwide total came out at $61.7 million USD. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods worldwide total came at $50 million USD. In conclusion, you can guarantee Toei Animation and company will continue to release more Dragon Ball films in the near future. However, the 20th Dragon Ball film has not released in Europe, which opens in theaters on January 23rd.
