Those who are familiar with the classic anime/manga series Dragon Ball should recognize the Chinese legendary story of The Monkey King. Son Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball is heavily influenced of the Monkey King character, also known as Sun Wukong. Aside from Dragon Ball, there’s been many adaptations from the Chinese myth, including the 2015 Chinese CG animated film of Monkey King: Hero is Back. The film has done well in the box office, making just over $153 million. The film released in theaters only in China, South Korea, and other parts of Europe.

To continue the success of the film, a PlayStation 4 was released. Unlike the film, the game was released across the globe and far more locations. While many have not seen the film, more have at least heard of The Monkey King story. In the game, you’ll adventure through 10 levels. Fighting enemies that stand in your way but unfortunately waiting for those loading screens to be done loading. The game does include some scenes that were never released in the original 2015 film. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s not much a treat. The Monkey King throws a lot of punches and gags but tend to miss its mark when it comes down to basic details of the game. Long transitions, obnoxious characters and some battles become annoying.

It’s a great looking game. Beautiful environments and interesting world. Those looking to get familiar with the Chinese myth may want to wait a little longer for a price break. Otherwise, watch the film it was based on.
