Final Fantasy VII Remake Opening Comparison

2020 vs 1997

Square Enix has released a new movie clip though this is not a new trailer. Instead, fans are greeted with the Final Fantasy VII Remake opening movie. Comparing to the original 1997 opening, the remake version is twice as long. Showcasing the world outside of Midgar and life inside Midgar before we see Aerith. While the original was short, in 1997, this was a huge accomplishment with those polygonal shapes and simple textures. Sadly those don’t hold up on its own after a couple decades in today’s technology.

After 23 years, Final Fantasy VII returns and tells more about the story than the 1997 version. Fans of the original will recognize some of the chorus from “One Winged Angel”, Sephiroth’s battle theme. Seeing the details from outside to the streets of Midgar was done remarkably well. Plus, we see more expressions of Aerith during her scene. The camera angel matches identically with the 1997 when zooming out from Aerith to the aerial view of Midgar and to the train’s stop in one of the sectors where the game starts. Square Enix is keeping the remake close to the 1997 game as possible. You can take a look at the 2020 and 1997 opening movies below.

Final Fantasy VII Remake launches for the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. Pre-orders are open on Square Enix’s online store.
