After weeks of rumors and speculation, Nintendo finally reveals its 3D Mario collection. Super Mario 3D All-Stars officially announced for the Nintendo Switch. This trilogy set includes these classic games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The three classic games were milestones for each Nintendo console since the Nintendo 64 and celebrating the Super Mario Bros‘ 35th anniversary with these titles is certainly welcoming.
While these games are a straight port to the Nintendo Switch, they’ll receive a few touch-ups. However each game won’t receive the same treatment. Here’s the breakdown:
Super Mario 64
- Higher resolutions
- Joy-Con controls with rumble
- Browsable soundtrack
Super Mario Sunshine
- Higher resolution
- 16:9 screen ratio
- Joy-Con controls with rumble
- Browsable soundtrack
Super Mario Galaxy
- Higher resolution
- Motion control Joy-Cons to resemble the Wii Remote
- Touchscreen for catching stars when not docked
- Browsable soundtrack
Super Mario 3D All-Stars gets a surprise release date for September 18th for both digitally on the Nintendo eShop and a physical edition at retail stores. However, there’s a catch. The trilogy pack will only be available for a limited time for both formats. Consumers have until the end of March 2021 to own the set. A surprising, confusing thing for Nintendo to do with their beloved mascot though not the first time the company has made their products limited (cough, amiibo, cough). If you own the digital copy and need to re-download the game, Nintendo has confirmed customers that purchased the game can still re-download it after March 2021.
One can speculate that next year, the game company could add their Nintendo 64, Gamecube, and Wii library on the Nintendo eShop or on their online subscription. Let’s hope but let’s not get our hopes up just yet. Fans wanting Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch will have to wait a little longer if the game will show up on Nintendo’s online service.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars releases on the Nintendo Switch on September 18, 2020 for a limited time until end of March 2021 for $59.99 USD. Pre-orders available now on the official Super Mario Bros 35th Anniversary website.
