On May 9th, it’s a special day for Dragon Ball fans, known as “Goku Day”. Toei Animation and Dragon Ball’s creator, Akira Toriyama, made a special announcement for that day. A new Dragon Ball Super movie announced and releasing in 2022. According to Toei Animation, the film kicked-off in 2018 before the last film’s release, Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Depending on the results of the Broly film would determine the next step for Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball‘s last film brought in over $120 million worldwide from the box office. It’s safe to say the film did its job to continue the Dragon Ball story.

Toriyama sent out a message to fans of the popular anime and manga series that he’ll return to lead the story and production of the next film. Regards to the story, Toriyama looking to bring a “large-scale story” and an “unexpected character”. Frieza and Broly made their return in the last couple Dragon Ball films, could we see Cell or another familiar face making a return on the big screen? Will we see the same animation style used once again? Many questions unanswered and fans will have to wait again for more news later in the year.

In the meantime, the Dragon Ball Super manga continues to release a chapter per month. The manga recently finished an arc with villain Moro, could we see it animated as a film? Fans have been waiting patiently for the anime return since March 25, 2018 and while a new film is great, a series return is also welcoming.
