Earthbound (aka Mother) is a unique styled game that inspired many, such as indie game Reverie. Development team Infamous Rabbit and publishers Pineapple Works are looking to continue that Earthbound charm with this indie RPG, Oddventure. The game launched its Kickstarter campaign on May 6th and in six days, the project was successfully funded. The indie game currently in development for the PC (Windows, Linux, Apple) and the Nintendo Switch. The team posted a video of their RPG working on the Nintendo Switch. Those interested in playing Oddventure can play the demo on the game’s Steam page for Windows.
About the Game
Oddventure is a JRPG about the misadventures of Charlie – a nihilistic and rebellious teenage girl with anger issues and social awkwardness. Charlie searches for her troublesome brother Bonzo and ultimately for a way back home. The setting is the Kingdom of Luxia, a land straight from original Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales with a dark, Nietzschean twist.
The game’s battle system uses emotions to determine the battle, calling it Mood Battle System. With this, you can make enemies cry to their mommies or spare them to get gifts. Each battle can end differently but beware choices you make can determine the outcome. Speaking of choices, the game gives players story-driven choices that can determine the game’s storyline and determines which one of its many endings you’ll end up with. Choose wisely.
The game’s soundtrack composed by Piotr Surmacz was heavily inspired by popular RPGs such as: Grandia (Noriyuki Iwadare), Final Fantasy VII (Nobuo Uematsu), Mother 3 (Shogo Sakai), and Undertale (Toby Fox). All very well-known soundtracks and composers. Additionally, you can purchase the game’s demo soundtrack and other albums on his bandcamp page.
While no official launch date confirmed, pledges have described estimated delivery for September 2022 and the official website at a Q3 2022 release window. Oddventure is in-development for PC and Nintendo Switch.
