Just like that, Sonic Origins officially announced by Sega this morning and releases June 23rd. The compilation set celebrates not only Sonic’s 30th anniversary but also the original games that shaped the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. From the first Sonic the Hedgehog game to Sonic & Knuckles that were released on the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. Unfortunately that leaves out Sonic 3D Blast that released on both the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn.

As mentioned yesterday, the anniversary set is fully remastered for today’s modern televisions. Additionally, players can play either two modes: classic and anniversary. Classic mode is played in 4:3 with bars each side. Anniversary mode for 16:9 (widescreen). However, the original animation for Sonic CD will still be in its original 4:3 format. Here are the games coming to Sonic Origins:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Sonic CD
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles

Those who enjoyed the animations from Sonic Mania and during its mini series, they’re back as add-ins in Sonic Origins. Additionally, the game will add hard missions, additional music tracks, letterbox backgrounds, character animations, and an island camera, that is if you pre-order the game or purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition.

The game releases digitally this summer but there are a few options to pick from. Unfortunately it’s pretty confusing how it’s laid out. To get everything, fans will want to pre-order the digital deluxe. This gives everything from Hard Missions to additional animations outside the main game. The standard edition comes with fewer options, such as no Hard Missions, no animated menu screen, etc. Otherwise you’ll have to pay for the Premium Fun and Classic Music packs just to get the same content as the deluxe edition. If you’re looking just the standard edition, then you’re looking at the game itself, nothing more.

Pre-orders open up for all console and PC shops when available. For additional details and purchasing options, fans can visit the official Sonic Origins website.
