Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Opening Weekend Explodes at $20.1 Million

Double earnings than previous film.

This weekend was a win for anime, especially for Dragon Ball fans. The latest Dragon Ball animated film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero opening weekend brought in $20.1 million in the United States at 3,900 screens. That’s more than double the amount from Dragon Ball‘s previous film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which opened at $9.8 million in 2018. Additionally, the film did better in the states than Japan’s opening weekend at just over $4.9 million. The film becomes the third highest opening anime film. The second goes to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, opening at $21.2 million in April 2021, with number one still goes to the 1999 Pokémon: The First Movie at $31 million opening weekend. The box office had a five week slump until Dragon Ball‘s film came.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero competed with another film, Beast, which also opened the same weekend. Unfortunately for the film, it came in second at $11.6 million from 3,743 screens. Bullet Train came in third place at $8 million, followed by DC League of Super-Pets at $1.8 million, then Top Gun: Maverick at $1.7 million.
