Nintendo has a habit to release a specialized console for just about every big title released by Nintendo such as Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. Back in March, the latest special edition announced by Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition. This special console would release on April 28th with special prints on the console, dock, and joycons. Unfortunately it does not come with the official video game when it releases May 12th. After obtaining one, we’ve took it out and took a few glamor shots. It certainly is a sleek looking console that Zelda fans will want to own.
Utilizing the Zelda series’s color scheme of green and gold, this Nintendo Switch edition plastered with those colors along with white as an accent. Additionally, patterns used on the console’s back, joycons, and dock are based off of the designs used in the latest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Whether you have the console docked or playing on handheld mode, the overall design works together quite nicely.
On the console itself, the back still uses the same black colored like the other Switch consoles. However it’s detailed with a transparency of patterns that give it a unique flavor. You’ll hardly look at it but at least the console has some type of decor based off Tears of the Kingdom.
The Joy-Cons detailed different from the left and right. The left Joy-Con in green and gold with a branched-off pattern. Whereas the right Joy-Con is in gold and white with the circular patterns (similar used on the back of the console) in white. Using the Joy-Cons detached from the console, the Joy-Cons use wrist straps that are in gold-colored thread with bits of white in it. While not as vibrant as the special Skyward Sword Joy-Cons, these controllers fit well with the overall set of this Nintendo Switch.
The back of the Joy-Cons don’t have nearly as much details as the front. There’s a painted symbol on each side that both in gold but different. The rest is white and not painted, using the console’s original plastic. It’s for the best as player’s hands will rub on this surface constantly that can cause paint to rub-off and loose its value. Plus, this Switch console uses white as its colored theme.
The dock carries the traditional white from when the OLED Switch first came out. However, in this version it uses the patterns from both the left and right Joy-Con with the gold color on white. The triforce, a well-known symbol in video game history, painted front and center of the dock. The back of the dock has much less details. Instead a small pattern on each corner in gold. Nintendo had to put something there and not just a blank canvas. Additional details or even a smaller triforce used could have worked.
Overall, for the first official Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch console, it’s a great one to own. Whether there’ll be another version is a mystery. Regardless, don’t hold your breath as the Switch is already six years old and a new Nintendo console should come out within a couple years. If you can afford to replace your current one, it’s worth it for Zelda fans, especially if you do not own the latest OLED model. If you have the OLED model, its highly suggested to sell it to make-up the difference for this Zelda version.
