The Super Mario Bros. Movie may not have gotten the thumbs-up from top critics, it’s an enjoyable film Super Mario fans will surely enjoy. Our review explains more. Filled with nostalgia from beginning to end, the film broke many records worldwide. With the film still technically in theaters and released digitally for buy and rent on May 16th. A street date of the film’s physical release originally slated mid-June but rumors speculating a July release. Here at Cat with Monocle, we were surprised that our pre-order of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie Power Up Edition came in so early. We took a few photos for you viewers to see a close-up what this special edition offers.
Inside the Power Up Case
The steelbook case itself is very simple, black with a picture of the iconic super mushroom on front and back. On the back, it’s the rear view of the super mushroom. Unfortunately the case is not finger-proof so those collectors will have to clean it often. The spine uses the official movie logo for easy display on your shelf.
Inside the case, a scenic image of the Mushroom Kingdom spreads across both sides and the spine. On the left, a paper slip inserted inside the case (not pictured) comes with a digital code of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and a “free points” towards a free movie from Universal Studios. On the right are the official movie discs. This 4K version set comes with two discs: 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray disc. The 4K disc while colored and labeled with the iconic Rainbow Road scene from the movie, the Blu-Ray disc is generic as it comes, just red ink for the logo and lettering.
It’s a straight-forward special edition set. Nothing fancy but fans of the movie will still enjoy holding on this and displaying it next to their Question Mark popcorn tin from AMC. If you’ve missed out, the generic movie poster’s cover with its official disc works just fine. The Super Mario Bros. Movie Power Up Edition and the generic 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray editions can be purchased through Best Buy.
What’s In the Discs?
Popping in the movie, the physical edition comes with a few bonus materials:
- Getting to Know the Cast
Learn the voice actors, writers, directors for the following characters: Mario, Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Toad, Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, Lumalee - Leveling Up: Making The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Lean more about the making of the animated film in these following categories:- Level 1 – Inspiration
- Level 2 – Design
- Level 3 – Music
- Level 4 – Locations
- Level 5 – Power Ups
- Level 6 – Easter Eggs
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie Field Guide
The cast of the movie explains each kingdom, power-ups and characters. - “Peaches” Lyric Video
Jack Black introduces his character, Bowser, and the music video of “Peaches” with lyrics. - Leadership Lessons From Anya Taylor-Joy
Voice actor for Princess Peach tells her five leadership lessons she learned while working with the film.
Many of these bonus materials are OK, the “Leveling Up” section of content has the most intriguing pieces. For example, in the Easter Eggs segment the staff of the movie explain their favorite Easter Eggs but don’t explain every piece hidden throughout the film. It would be nice to see a feature where they highlight all the Easter Egg pieces but that’s probably asking too much.
For those wondering if the missing tracks that were replaced with copyrighted artists would be an option to play (e.g. “Drivin’ Me Bananas”), it is not. The movie setup gives you the option for DVS (Descriptive Video Service) and let’s you choose three different languages: English, Spanish, and French.
