Dimension Tripper Neptune: TOP NEP is a 16-bit rail shooter that’s a fun quick play, even if it’s a short adventure.

Let’s Ride

TOP NEP is a mix between Space Harrier and Hyperdimension Neptunia. This fast-paced title has a third-person perspective behind the protagonist. The level animates towards the player while you maneuver your character in any direction except forward and backwards. Enemies will fly towards you and will either try to collide with you or shoot projectiles at you. Avoid taking damage and shoot them down before you get hurt. Your fighter can attack in a couple ways. You can shoot unlimited projectiles or you can use your sword to deflect enemy fire.

You can also summon a “wingmate” for a limited timeframe. To call upon your partner, you’ll have to collect enough coins that are spread across the level. Once your wingmate’s gauge fills, the summon automatically occurs. There are various wingmate characters that’ll come forth, but they all share the same similar style of attacking with projectiles. Still, it’s always great to have a friend. At times, you can have more than one wingmate on the same screen. You know what they say, the more the merrier.

The game consists of five levels, each with a boss battle at the end. Bosses do more attacks than the normal baddies you battle through. Additionally, they each follow a pattern, though it’s not difficult to figure out. However, the final boss will load the screen full of projectiles you’ll have to dodge. If you’re a fan of bullet-hell games, you’ll have fun with this, but it’s a less stressful experience than in titles like Ikaruga.

The game offers an online leaderboard through the game’s Steam page. With how short the title is (it can be cleared within thirty minutes), why not challenge yourself and try to beat the game with a higher score? There are two modes to play: Normal and Hard. They both play the same, but with the Hard mode, there are no continues. In Normal mode, you have to spend some of your high score points to continue. It’s too bad there aren’t enough modes or options to expand the gameplay. Even a Time Attack option or goals to clear stages based on requirements would add more value to the game.

Pixel Galore

TOP NEP’s graphics and sound effects resemble the 16-bit area with its pixel-style art and chiptune tracks. While the graphics look detailed and great on a smaller screen, it starts to lose its visual charm on large TV screens. This makes some battles a little tricker when moving around to dodge and grab coins. Character designs also look downgraded on the big screen. It’s advised to play on a smaller scale to keep its retro look in style. The game is also verified on Steam Deck, making it worth the purchase to play on that portable device. It’s unfortunate the game isn’t available on any other devices and is stuck on Steam. The game retails for $4.99 USD, but expect frequent sales for this title. It’s worth the purchase under $5.

The Final Shot

Dimension Tripper Neptune: TOP NEP is a very short but fun title. If you have a thirst for a quick rail shooter, it’s worth the pickup.
