Based on the popular fantasy comedy series KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Love For These Clothes Of Desire! is a visual novel game that has more player interaction as well as fun dialogue that makes you feel like you’re watching a brand new animated season. In other words, it’s a great adaptation to the anime.
It’s All About the Attire
While Love For These Clothes Of Desire! doesn’t tell exactly when the story takes place, based on the characters involved within the game, it’s safe to say it’s after season 2. Those who aren’t familiar with the original series will be able to follow along but not fully understand the comical dialogue that made the series popular in the first place. It’s advised to watch the series first before jumping into this visual novel.
The story revolves around Kazuma Satou, the main protagonist in the series, and his party of women with, shall we say, unique personalities. Aqua, once a goddess, is short-sighted, thinks of herself, and turns “good deeds” into disasters for the party. Megumin is an arch wizard who can cast a dangerous spell called Explosion. However, she can only cast it once, and that’s the only spell she can use. Then there’s Darkness, a masochistic crusader who can’t actually hit anything with her attacks. Put them together in one house and you have one of the funniest dialogue exchange groups than any other anime.
In the game, Kazuma and team come across a black slab on one of their days off from adventuring. Megumin insists on taking the slab because it’s black, one of her favorite colors. Kazuma is hesitant based on the fact that the last object they picked up was cursed. After being talked into it, the party takes the mysterious slab home. Sure enough, it’s a cursed object. The slab creates clothing based on the materials you use on the slab, but doing so comes with a price. A person using the slab is cursed with a different personality. For example, Darkness enjoys being humiliated, but the curse makes her enjoy humiliating others. With the odd personalities this party already has, you can see where this will go.
To break the curse, the person who is cursed has to feel fulfilled in both mind and body. This means expressing their desires and wearing the attire will break the spell. If the curse is not lifted in a certain amount of time, the curse becomes permanent. However, there are other things to worry about as well. The slab they found once belonged to a noble who was recently robbed, and law enforcers confront Kazuma and team about it. In exchange for clearing their names from a misunderstanding, the team is required to make special clothing with the slab for the noble.
From then on, the game really begins to unfold, and the charm of KonoSuba is showcased. The hysterical dialogue leading up to each chapter and after the credits makes it feel like you are watching a new season of the show. That said, some dialogue scenes feel like they drag on too long without any player interaction, especially after the game credits. Don’t be shocked if you spend at least fifteen minutes on some of these.
Manage Your Time
What makes Love For These Clothes Of Desire! different from other visual novel games is that there are more ways for players to get involved. In each chapter, you have a set of days to collect materials and make the requested clothing for the client. You’ll plan five days of activities at a time. The first three are either quests and/or part time jobs like bartending or mining. You do not actually do the activities, though. The game automatically generates quick animations of your day job and you’ll reap the rewards. Day four is a rest day where you will have the opportunity to interact with other female characters in the game to increase your relationship level, depending on the multiple choice option given. Once you have the level high enough, you’ll earn a scenario with that character after the game credits when you complete chapter 4. Day five is the opportunity to purchase ingredients and generate clothing. Regarding the curse mentioned earlier, you’ll have plenty of time to create the attire to help break the spell, since you need to complete that before taking on the noble’s request.
During your playthrough, players also receive requests from the guild to make clothes. Your only day to create clothes is the fifth day on your schedule. You’ll have to manage your days before time runs out. If you decide to make the noble’s clothing first, you’ll jump into the next chapter. Be warned: some materials needed for some of the clothing requested from guild jobs are only available in some chapters and disappear after proceeding to the next.
Based on the days and materials needed, you won’t be able to do everything in one playthrough. The game is designed for players to go through multiple rounds to view all scenarios and achieve a high enough level from each female character in the game. To earn 100% in every scenario, expect to play the game at least ten times. Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness have two different endings each, and there are four sub-heroines (Chris, Wiz, Yunyun, Sena) with their own scenarios. Thankfully, players can skip through dialogue scenes they’ve read before. That’ll save time.
Feels Like the Anime
In addition to the well-scripted dialogue, the game’s story is made better thanks to the characters being voiced by the same cast as the anime. Character illustrations also feel like they were grabbed right from the show. Plus, all clothing changes for each female character show up in cutscenes, showcasing the fan service. Not everything is great, though. During a few dialogue scenes, the volume of some characters feels too soft and then sounds much better in the next scene. There’s no audio adjustment for each character like in My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- but at least there’s text to read what’s happening. Also, there’s only Japanese dubs available; no other language dub options exist. Oh well.
The Final Outfit
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Love For These Clothes Of Desire! is an entertaining visual novel with more interaction than expected. Plus, its hysterical dialogue and characters make you feel like you’re watching a new season of KonoSuba. So give your favorite KonoSuba character some love. The perfect outfit awaits!
