Funko Fusion is based off of the popular collection figures and turned into a third-person action game. Looking like an intriguing game, too many drawbacks that the game should be left on the self.

Save the Funko World!

Players have the option to choose from a few selected characters from available popular movies or shows. For example, Scott Pilgrim vs the World or Masters of the Universe. Whichever you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to change characters from different franchises later on. Additional figures that were not available to choose from become available the further you play.

You’ll encounter the mascot of the Funko brand, Freddy Funko, a kind and loveable mascot. You and Freddy encounter a mysterious purple slime that’s taking over the Funko world. Eddy, the Funko who’s behind the issues, looks to take Freddy’s crown to rule over Funko. Thanks to Eddy and your assistance, Eddy escapes without it but at a large cost. Small crowns that broke from Eddy’s crown are now scattered across worlds. With Eddy out of commission due to his battle with Eddy, you’ll have to step-in. Find the crowns before Eddy does.

The story, while not uniquely different, does a well enough job introducing the world of Funko and different franchises into one. Visually, the game looks interesting with its attention to detail and aesthetics. However, that’s the only positive part of the game.

What Now?

After picking your character, you are literally dropped in and gives you little guidance on next steps. Additionally, the game doesn’t give a basic guide on how-to-play. For example, one of the characters in the intro “doesn’t recognize your character on the list”. To get past this, you have to go to the nearest Funko box and swap characters, then report back to the character to continue the story. For skipping the simplest action to newcomers, this is concerning as this can lead to frustration and confusion on playing.

Battles and boss fights are frustrating. The game tries to give you clues on how-to battle but they either seem too vague or it doesn’t work as intended. For example, you’re asked to hit the “amp” in Scott Pilgrim’s world to send soundwaves to create a bridge gap to the other platform to take out an enemy. First, you have to change a character that has a guitar to make this work and the game doesn’t tell you that so you have to figure this out on your own. Second, after successfully hitting the “amp” with your guitar’s attack power, you jump in the soundwave bridge but when you get to the platformer, it doesn’t land you and you can’t jump onto it. So you’re stuck and have to wait for the soundwave effect to wear out.

Final Break

These are just the tip of the iceberg on trying to explore the beginning of the game and it’s already alarming how many hoops and ladders a player must endure to feel satisfied. Funko Fusion feels like it could be a fun game to explore and collect items like other popular platform titles. Unfortunately, the game needs to stay on the shelf and be sent back to give more time to build back in the factory.
