First impressions, RPG Maker WITH is a role-playing game (RPG) maker where players can build their own fantasy, turned-based world. Giving players inspiration but limits newcomers to enjoy it.
A Blank Page
Those who’ve played previous RPG Maker games will have a better understanding of the game’s building mechanics. Newcomers will certainly have a difficult time where to start. There’s no tutorials on how-to begin or learn more advanced setups. Leaving it up to players to figure it out themselves or go online to read/watch tutorials from other players.
If you’re not in the mood of building or have an art block on creativity, players can download games already built and experience customized RPGs. Additionally, some of the games made by players can be edited, if there’s no lock on it. It’s a good way to get familiar with what WITH can do and can’t.
Playing WITH on the Nintendo Switch lets players use the Switch’s touch screen, making it easier than the controller to switch between menus and items. However, it’s not 100% perfect. It’s not touch-screen friendly with icons and buttons small enough to make it difficult to touch and there are missing items like an eraser tool that would make building easier.
A Wide World to Build
Players can do a variety of things such as the battle system view, background, foreground designs in battle, background music and more. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Players can also create events that trigger situations such as a dialogue or your character reaching a specific location on the screen. It’s just a matter of getting familiar with the game’s building mechanics.
Random battles can also be adjusted to specific steps and intro animations like zoom-in are available. The game does a great job with its mechanic options despite the learning curve.
The Final Game
RPG Maker WITH has an interesting concept with building your own role-playing game but comes at a price with a high learning curve.
