Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast (First Impressions)

More than just goblins.

First impressions, Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast is a tactical, role-playing game (RPG) that takes place in the same universe of the popular anime series. It doesn’t branch off the traditional path of a tactical RPG which isn’t a bad thing but its pacing to get to the action will take time.

Original Slayer

Kumo Kagyu, who worked on the Goblin Slayer series, provided the game’s original concept. Additionally, the character designs were done by Noboru Kannatsuki who also worked on the anime series. Giving it an original but familiar vibe of Goblin Slayer. The story and characters from both the series and game take place in the Four-Cornered World. Players thinking they’ll play as or follow the path of the protagonist of the anime and fight similar battles will be in for a surprise as this is an entirely new story that you could say branches from the anime.

A New Slayer Path

The game is based off of a new character, a heroine named Guild Master. She’s new to the town as both an adventurer and guild master of the town’s guild, where adventurers take jobs to complete missions. Arriving on her first day, she’s informed a bundle of goblins are gathering at a nearby, deserted castle. Being too close to human civilization and no adventurer available, the Guild Master takes it upon herself to scout the situation.

Arriving there, you find yourself in a situation where the goblins have surrounded you and prepare to attack the Guild Master. Fleeing into the castle and one action led to another, you find yourself accidentally awakening the beautiful, noble female vampire. She aids in battle against the aggressive goblins. At this point, when reading the story with the Japanese voiceovers at a steady pace, it takes about forty minutes to get to your first battle.

Beginning of battle, the Guild Master finds out she carries a special trait from her bloodline that lets her see the entire battlefield. It’s an interesting take and explanation of the view when you compare it to other tactical battles like Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Starting off, both fighters start at level one and limit the amount of magic points and attack points to use to make a quick work on these goblins. You only have two goblins and a hobgoblin so it’s a doable battle. If the challenge is too much, the game offers an easier mode.

After the battle, the Guild Master persuades the vampire to “join” the guild at her location. The story continues and takes a good half hour before you can take some control.

Build Your Guild

In Nightmare Feast, players can hire adventurers, increase ranks, purchase items, weapons and armor, upgrade equipment and more. It takes a different approach on building your team but in the end, it feels very similar to other popular tactical games. You won’t fight just goblins but other enemies such as bandits and monsters. Regarding the characters from the anime series, they appear as guests in certain battles. It feels unfortunate they aren’t available freely to join.

The Final Slayer

Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast is an entertaining tactical RPG whether you are familiar with the anime series or not. If you don’t mind the long-running dialogues, you have yourself a fun adventure with or without the original protagonist, the Goblin Slayer.
