Touhou Spell Carnival takes a different approach from its series’ bullet-hell gameplay. The game takes a mixture of tactical styles with real action as users have to dodge rays of flying projectiles and attack simultaneously.

Action-Packed Tactics

It’s a unique take that does take awhile to adjust to its mechanics but it does help if you have some knowledge of tactical and bullet-hell game experience. Unlike general tactical games where you take turns, Spell Carnival is all action and fast-paced. If you’re having difficulties playing, it’s highly suggested to switch to the easy mode until you get the hang of the game’s gameplay. These settings can be changed anytime during the game.

Battles are done on a 3D plane of tiles. Characters on both sides are in 3D models. You only have a certain space to maneuver and fight on. Move at your own risk.

The game offers various ways to play. You can double press a button on the controller to make all players do an action simultaneously. For example, firing projectiles at enemies or moving your characters to a different tile on the battle map. Players can also command specific attacks and movements by selecting that character. At the same time, you have to be very aware of what is occurring on the field.

Each battle you win, your party gains experience points. Those who were active on the battlefield earn more than those sitting on the sideline. Players can also equip items and weapons to make their party stronger. Giving it a more depth gameplay and thinking process when not in battle.

Make an Army

The choices you make will determine which characters you’ll encounter and join your team. Building your team that helps balance your needs. For example, a party of fighters makes work in some battles but in another battle you’ll want a healer character and one fighter to keep the battle in your favor.

Spell Carnival, like its previous Touhou games, is packed with colorful character illustrations and a variety of personalities. There’s also a large amount of dialogue that occurs through the game where at times it feels too much to comprehend after going through action-packed battles. At least there’s the skip button if you run out of patience.

The Final Spell

Touhou Spell Carnival is entertaining with its unique approach of mixing tactical style gameplay with bullet-hell battles. If you’ve enjoyed previous Touhou titles, you’ll enjoy this one. Those looking for a new style of tactical gameplay, give this one a spin.
