Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning picks up where the 2023 film, Dead Reckoning Part 1, leaves off. Though there is no recap of the story up to now, the viewer is not lost at all as to what is happening. This movie does work well, even though the run time does drag the pace of the film down at times.

Deja Vu

All becomes clear in no time as Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, continues to search for the dreaded rogue A.I. known as Entity, which, of course, hedges on finding that submarine that sank in Part 1. His team is still together for this one with fine additions Grace, played by Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Dead Reckoning Part 1) and Paris, played by Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy, Dead Reckoning Part 1). Finally defining the Entity was both surprising and a bit surreal with recent world events being what they are. Thank goodness we have Ethan Hunt and his team to keep us safe from threats we never knew existed!

Plenty to Go Around

The main villain in this film is, of course, Gabriel, played by Esai Morales (Crescent City, Dead Reckoning Part 1). With his own team of evildoers behind him, Gabriel keeps Ethan off balance for the most part with several schemes to thwart all efforts to locate the submarine. With the usual ‘against all odds’ with the utterly impossible sprinkled in, Ethan must find ways to accomplish this mission.

The three-dimensional cross key is still a major thing, though when it comes time to utilize it there is still a good hour of movie left to go. Let’s just say it’s the first step in a menagerie of events that must take place to stop the Entity once and for all. This is where the action in this film goes into overdrive, and yes, the suspense spikes heavily as well. Time itself is the enemy from this point on with locations across the globe having to piece this puzzle together.

Time is of the Essence

One could think that the intricate steps needed to end the threat for good would be so confusing that there would be no way to succeed, but this is Mission: Impossible. How it all comes together is a feat of writing and directing that is the calling card of the franchise. All the audience can do is sit back and think “This oughta be good”. In a three hour film that can feel like it at times, the final hour is very good indeed. Chaos ensues right to the very end in a flurry of moves that are so tight you and every team in the movie are not sure whether it actually worked. To call it a nailbiter is the movie understatement of the year.

The Finale?

This film is the last for Tom Cruise without a doubt. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning marks the end of a very successful franchise for the actors and teams involved. Could this be the end of Mission: Impossible itself? Highly doubtful, truth be told. There is plenty there to come up with a new team and new adventures in the M:I world, though it may be a while until a 400 million budget gets approved for one. Until then, The Final Reckoning serves as a breathtaking final mission.

An early screening provided for this review. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning arrives in theaters on May 23, 2025. Fans can visit the official website for tickets and additional information.
