Whether you are familiar with the Jujutsu Kaisen series or new to it, Hidden Inventory / Premature Death doesn’t require a lot of knowledge of the Jujutsu world. However, having at least some knowledge of the two characters, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, would help you appreciate the film more as it covers their past.

In the film, both Gojo and Geto are second-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High, a school that trains the next generation of sorcerers to battle cursed spirits. They are tasked with escorting Riko Amanai, a special vessel known as the “Star Plasma Vessel”, to Master Tengen, a powerful sorcerer who maintains the barriers at Jujutsu High. The vessel is crucial for Tengen, as it will provide them with a new body to help maintain control. Otherwise, it could lose its mind and become a threat to humanity.

Gojo, a talented sorcerer who comes across as a clown and full of himself, is depicted in the film trying to understand his powers more by practicing new skills. His friend and classmate, Geto, is equally strong and has a more serious demeanor. Geto aims to protect humanity from cursed spirits by absorbing and controlling the spirits. Watching the dynamic between the two characters, both in and out of battle, is entertaining. Throughout their mission, they encounter numerous sorcerers who are intent on killing Riko before she reaches Master Tengen. The film introduces the Sorcerer Killer, Toji Zenin, who was hired by a religious group called the Star Religious Group to put a bounty on Riko. Toji is a skilled fighter who excels in tactics when facing sorcerers, despite his lack of luck in gambling. Fans of the series will recognize this character, while newcomers will be drawn to his personality and abilities.

The movie introduces other students from Jujutsu High early on, but they are not prominently featured once Gojo and Geto take the spotlight. This is a missed opportunity, as viewers are only briefly introduced to younger versions of characters from the anime series, such as Kento Nanami. Riko’s screen time feels too short considering the buildup around her character, especially given her fate as the special vessel. Additionally, Toji could have been given more screen time to showcase his abilities beyond what is explained during the heat of battle.

The pacing of the film has some issues. Trying to condense several episodes into a movie length results in some scenes feeling either too drawn out or too rushed, creating an imbalance. For instance, the scenes with Gojo, Geto, Riko, and RIko’s maid tend to drag on with added dialogue to quickly explain situations. While this approach may work for an anime series with more time for storytelling, cramming too much into a short timeframe can be confusing for newcomers to the series.

Mappa once again does a great job animating the latest Jujutsu Kaisen film. It’s unique angles during scenes like a character opening a door and the animation effects during fight scenes really stand out. Witnessing Gojo’s power unfold and Geto’s absorption are more impactful in the animation, bringing the original manga to life. The soundtrack also does a good job of matching the atmosphere in the film, creating more impact and making the scenes pop even more.

The Final Sorcerer

Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death is visually impressive as viewers witness the backstory of Gojo and Geto. However, the film does have some issues with pacing in order to fit a set of episodes within a movie-length time frame. Newcomers may still be able to grasp the overall plot, but for Jujutsu Kaisen fans, it is a must-watch.

An early screening provided for this review. Fans can visit the film’s official website for more information and tickets.
