Oh, Hi! is a dark comedy film that follows a romantic getaway that takes a turn for the worse, as it defies convention and offers a unique take on the typical romance movie.
A “Romatic” Getaway

The film starts off by foreshadowing a suspenseful scene where something tragic has happened to a young adult, then cuts to the past, leaving the audience pondering what’s happening. Oh, Hi! follows the relationship between Iris, played by Molly Gordon (Shiva Baby, Booksmart) and Isaac, played by Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), as they travel for a weekend romantic getaway. The chemistry and humor between the two actors are great. For example, Isaac accidentally runs his car into a local merchant’s strawberry stand, and the next scene shows the back of their car filled with strawberries. From their banter to their sarcastic behavior towards each other, they look like the perfect couple.
However, things take a big turn when Isaac reveals his stance on his relationship with Molly, explaining he’s not looking for a relationship. This catches Molly off guard and she goes into an anxiety-induced scenario of confusion, unhinged attempts to win him back. From dancing to the extreme of a witchcraft drink while Isaac is tied up to the bed, some scenes feel like they drag too long. For example, Iris going back and forth between where Isaac is tied up and a different room multiple times to practice her dance to try and impress Isaac. The film doesn’t hold back on showcasing Molly’s desperate ways to win Isaac’s heart.
There are scenes that delve into dark comedy such as Molly helping Isaac urinate in a container instead of uncuffing his hands. After a long stretch of attempts, Molly reaches out to her friend for assistance, Max, played by Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers, Emo: The Musical). When she arrives, this begins the scene that was shown earlier in the film. With Max and her boyfriend, Kenny played by John Reynolds (Search Party, Stranger Things), the three try to figure out how to get Molly out of the scenario. Kenny brings up the criminal charges Molly could face for kidnapping and pushes her into more attempts to try and get Isaac to forget, such as giving him a concussion or using witchcraft. It’s a comical approach to how these scenarios unfold and what Molly will do to make Isaac fall in love with her. The film does feel like it goes over the top at times, making some of the results less satisfying. Overall, it’s an enjoyable film that takes a different path than other romantic-styled films.
Keep it Simple

Outside of the brief travel scenes, the film primarily takes place at the rented home. It features a small cast in this dark romantic film, keeping the storyline simple. David Cross (Arrested Development, Megamind) makes an appearance as the neighbor to the rented house. At times, Kenny’s presence may not have felt necessary and seemed to only add another male to the cast. Don’t expect blockbuster scenes or big-name lead roles to win you over. Despite being only an hour and a half long, the movie doesn’t overstay its welcome and maintains a smooth flow.
The cinematic scenes are well done. Watching Isaac run into the strawberry market from the backseat, and seeing the expressions of Isaac, Molly, and the merchant is priceless. Isaac’s point of view from the window adds an interesting perspective to the scenario.
