Super Waifu Ball is a platform puzzle game that closely resembles the popular franchise, Super Monkey Ball. While there is no issue of being inspired by another game, Super Waifu Ball could use some additional tweaks to bring it up to the level of the popular franchise.

Roll With It

Instead of monkeys inside hamster-like balls there are waifus, pretty anime girls. The gameplay and style are inspired by Super Monkey Ball with the goal of moving the ball from the start to the goal line. The goal line is typically placed in different areas in each level along with arranged layouts to challenge the player. For example, moving the ball across moving platforms without falling off the ledge. If the ball goes off the level, you’ll have to start the level over.

Unlike Super Monkey Ball, where you must complete the level before moving on, Super Waifu Ball lets players choose any level per world in any order. However, you must earn enough stars in each world before advancing to the next one. To collect stars, players must meet certain requirements: complete the level, finish in a timely manner, and/or collect all stars scattered across the level. You can repeat these levels as many times as you want. This gives players some freedom, as some levels provide an unbalanced challenge. For instance, players will come across some levels that are too challenging to finish, one of which occurs in the first world. It’s understandable that the difficulty increases the further you progress, but it feels inconsistent. Having the option to bypass a level for now will help, but players will have to try the level eventually if they want to collect stars to spend.

Collect Them All

Collecting stars also serves another purpose in the game. Players have the option to use their stars in a gacha machine filled with capsules. By spending a few stars, players can obtain a capsule that may contain items like figurines of the waifus that resemble the ones you can play as. These figures can be displayed on shelves for players to collect and admire. Additionally, players have the option to use their hard-earned stars to unlock more waifus to play as, with a total of five available and the game starting players off with one. The game could have included additional layers to its collecting system, such as allowing players to spend stars on different color themes or outfits for their playable waifus. Another idea could be to purchase different ball styles, offering players more options and increasing replay value.

Crash Course

The game features an additional mode called “Challenge Mode,” where players can test their skills on more difficult levels. However, this option is not unlocked right away, and players must progress through the worlds before accessing it. It seems odd that this mode can’t be available once players complete at least one world.

The courses are designed with some complexity, but additional designs and textures could enhance the overall experience. Unfortunately, the main issue is the camera shifting too much and not resetting its location, which can be frustrating for players. It adds an extra layer of challenge and frustration. The game includes a shortcut on the controller’s buttons to reset and pulling the analog stick in the opposite direction to slow the ball’s speed. These inputs could have been explained on the game’s settings screen to assist players with tricks that could benefit their gameplay. Ideally, the game could add different difficulty modes such as adding a boost option for newbies. Having an “easy” mode would help players understand the game’s mechanics more and then take off those assists when playing a more difficult mode.

The colors in the game are very vibrant and bright, especially the playable characters with their colorful hair and clothing. As expected in this title, the game incorporates bounce physics for the characters as they move through the course. However, the character designs are not the best when compared to many other anime-styled games and could use some improvements.

The Final Roll

Super Waifu Ball has some good ideas such as collecting and a variety of puzzle style courses, but it still needs some additional work before rolled out.

A PlayStation 5 review code provided for this review. Super Waifu Ball available to purchase on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
