Freakier Friday is the sequel to the 2003 film, Freaky Friday that still captures the original cult charm, but with some small bumps along the way.

It’s Freaky!

In the original, Freaky Friday tells the story of a mother and daughter who have a lot of conflict in their relationship. They wake up on a Friday the 13th to find themselves in each other’s bodies. In order to return to their own bodies, they must each find a way to connect with each other and find peace. The movie stars Tess Coleman, played by Jamie Lee Curtis (True Lies, Halloween) and her daughter, Anna Coleman, played by Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls, The Parent Trap).

Fast forward to Freakier Friday which is 22 years later where Curtis (Tess) and Lohan (Anna) return as mother and daughter for another Freaky Friday the 13th body swap. This time around Anna and Tess now have to contend with the next generation too with Tess’s daughter and soon to be step daughter. The adults switch into the teenagers bodies and the soon-to-be step sisters switch into the adult bodies, with one of the daughters in the mom’s body and the other in the grandma’s body. Like the original they must go into each other’s lives and navigate all the challenges that come with a different generation and body. Everyone must work together to find a way to connect and understand each other and have a change of heart.

With so many returning characters, including the original main characters, fans will also get to see some side characters such as Mr. Bates and Tess’ love interest from the original movie return as well. Although these characters have smaller parts, they added challenges to the day-to-day life of Anna and Tess. It was still nice to see familiar faces along with the main characters, a great nod to the original that will make people aged 40+ laugh in recognition of the original.

An interesting departure from most sequels is that this movie attracts film-goers of all ages, featuring familiar actors from multiple decades and a similar music style to the original. It includes a couple of the same songs, such as “Ultimate” by Lindsay Lohan, that are known and loved from the original movie. Paired with the fun and unique clothing style that appeals to multiple generations, it combines entertainment and humor for the audience regardless of age.

The story is filled with humor, using clothing, music, characters and especially animated and over-the-top acting to create laughs. There is a small nod to the dress that Anna’s old love interest, Jake, played by Chad Michael Murray (Freaky Friday, House of Wax), fell head over heels for when Tess’ character underwent a makeover while her daughter was in her body. This time around, he is infatuated with a new woman he just met, feeling a strong connection.

While the film utilized much of the same humor as the original, creating some redundancy, it also maintained continuity between the films. The actors embodied the tone well, including newcomers to the main cast: Anna’s daughter, Harper, played by Julia Butters (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, American Housewife) and Lily, Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter, played by Sophia Hammons (Up Here, The Social Dilemma). These teen newcomers played the characters of Tess and Anna who are decades older, with playful and humorous ease. Curtis and Lohan reprised their roles as teen girls in ways that are familiar to fans of the original Freaky Friday film.

While the theme of disagreement and fighting between characters remained present in this film, as in the original, the increased number of characters made the conflict seem a bit overwhelming. Slowing the characters down to learn more about each other, rather than focusing solely on humor and disagreements, took away from the film slightly more than the original. However, as sequels go, it does maintain continuity with the cult classic.

Freakier Final

Freakier Friday is definitely a great film that the whole family can enjoy in theaters. It may even be considered excellent by those who loved the 2003 film, thanks to its continuity and ability for all ages to enjoy. It has the same feel-good connection that made the 2003 film so beloved.

An early screening provided for this review. Freakier Friday arrives in theaters on August 8, 2025. Fans can visit the film’s official website for more information and tickets.
