Set to release on December 4, 2025, Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel to Octopath Traveler, taking place a few years before the events of the game. After spending an hour with the game’s demo, players will find that it offers more than your standard adventure, such as the ability to build a town.
More Than Just a Mobile Game

For those who haven’t played the mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, there is no need to worry. Octopath Traveler 0 is a revamped version of the mobile game, removing the gacha system, adding additional gameplay features, voiced dialogues, and a fresh storyline. This makes it feel like a seamless extension of the Octopath Traveler world.
You will still engage in the same style of gameplay as many role-playing games such as visiting towns, adventuring through the wilderness, and battling tough foes. However, players will now have the capability to rebuild their town with the tools provided in the game. You will need necessary materials before placing new homes and shops. Once you are ready, you can place them in allowed areas based on the grid layout highlighted by the game. Players can also customize their hero’s visual appearance to their liking.
Materials can be found in various areas while adventuring. During the limited time of the demo, there wasn’t much focus on the town building mechanics as it primarily centered on adventuring and battles.
Going Even Further

The battle system in Octopath Traveler 0 becomes more intense as players can have up to eight players on the battlefield at once. There are two rows, with the front line consisting of four players and the second row consisting of the remaining four. The front row can battle and the second back waits. Players have the ability to swap between each row to utilize different weapon attacks and abilities.
The game features a “Break and Boost” battle system that allows players to exploit enemy weaknesses and deplete their shield points. Once the shield points hit zero, the enemy is stunned, allowing your units to deal more damage. It is crucial to make use of this mechanic when facing tough foes.
Battles in the game are more intense and require strategic thinking. During the demo at PAX West, the boss battle proved to be challenging and required attention to detail each round. Carelessness could quickly turn the tide of the battle against you, making it an exciting experience for those who enjoy a challenge.
A Challenge Awaits
There is a lot to take in and explore from building to battles in Octopath Traveler 0. It feels like a game that will really challenge you, and those who have enjoyed the series so far should not skip this one. Octopath Traveler 0 will be released on December 4, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
