Same Tune but More Content

The game offers hilarious dialogue and an entertaining storyline that takes place in Hinomoto Netherworlds, resembling traditional Japanese culture from the Edo period. You’ll follow Pirilika who’s obsessed with bushido, an old warrior tradition that is now lost in the Hinomoto Netherlands. Alongside her is a warrior named Fuji, who despises bushido and has his own issues to resolve. It’s amusing to see the two and the additional goofy characters join forces. Gameplay mechanics such as turn-based moves, lifting, and Jumbification haven’t changed. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with the original game released two years ago; in fact, it was one of the positive aspects noted in our original review. Going through and replaying the game is no issue when wanting to surpass levels past 99, where there is generally a cap for general role-playing games.
In the 2023 version, players can purchase extra content such as additional characters from older Disgaea titles, costumes, and bonus items. Buying these would add an additional $39.99 USD if you purchase the season pass, which is now included in the Complete version.
Additionally, this new version of Disgaea 7 offers new content that was not originally in the 2023 version. After completing the game’s original story, a new chapter becomes available that takes place after the events of Disgaea called “The Nethertime Support Force”. In this additional story, you’ll travel through other dimensions from previous Disgaea worlds and have the opportunity to obtain a well-known Disgaea character named Asagi.
Players also have the opportunity to pass a bill in Disgaea 7 Complete to remove the original limits on character stats. This will remove the shackles that are holding your characters back and allow them to go above and beyond their levels. However there’s one thing standing in your way – you will need to beat Carnage Baal before trying to get the bill. Disgaea 7 isn’t holding back and will make you work for it.
If that wasn’t enough, a more powerful foe, stronger than Carnage Baal becomes available after your victory against Carnage. Pass the special Dark Assembly bill to fight the superboss, Rakshasa Baal. This battle is set to be the most difficult battle Disgaea players will face.
Smoother Battles

Graphics look the same, but the game looks and plays much smoother compared to the Nintendo Switch version. It actually resembles the PlayStation 5 version more in terms of visuals and performance. The frame rate is better, and frame rate drops are hardly noticed, except there’s a short pause during an autosave after returning to my home base. Transitioning from playing the original Disgaea 7 on the Switch to the Switch 2 console will show some performance improvements, but the updates made in Disgaea 7 Complete are much more polished.
Playing the game in portable mode feels and looks great. However, it’s a shame that the console itself drains the battery quickly, requiring you to find a power cord or dock to continue playing. Despite this console issue, Disgaea 7 Complete is a superior upgrade for Switch 2 players. It’s unfortunate that players have to purchase the game again to access these improvements, and save data won’t transfer either, so you will have to start over.
Dissecting the Price
The biggest drawback of Disgaea 7 Complete is its price point of $69.99 USD on the Nintendo eShop store. Being a two-year-old game, it’s difficult to justify this price, even with the addition of a $39.99 USD season pass for previous content. Comparatively, the original Disgaea 7 base game alone is still priced at $59.99 USD on the Nintendo eShop store.
Paying an extra $10 for additional content, improved performance, and better visuals on the Switch 2 compared to the Switch may seem like a better deal. However, trying to sell a two-year-old game for $69.99 USD presents a challenge, especially for those who have already purchased the game.
The Final Piece
Disgaea 7 Complete is the ultimate version of the 2023 release, including all original DLC, new post-game content, and improved gameplay performance. If you have not experienced the latest Disgaea installment yet, this edition is the best choice.
