The film is set in the Lower East Side of New York in 1952, shortly after the end of World War II. One character in particular, Marty Mauser, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two), disrupts the daily lives of those around him with his mischievous behavior. Marty is a highly confident table tennis player who always seems to stir up trouble wherever he goes. He uses any means necessary to get what he wants, such as stealing money from his uncle’s safe to fund his overseas competition.

This is just one example of Marty’s behavior. He charms women into a sexual relationship, demands better treatment from authority figures due to his table tennis skills, and constantly keeps the audience on their toes with his antics. The film is a whirlwind of events, leaving little room for viewers to catch their breath and process what is happening in the two-hour and thirty-minute runtime.

Despite initially despising Marty for his actions, viewers are drawn to see just how far he will go with his manipulative tactics. Surprisingly, Marty has a loyal group of friends who support him, despite his selfish nature. He consistently takes advantage of the opportunities presented to him by family and law enforcement, all while maintaining his love for table tennis. While audiences may want to dislike Marty, they are also intrigued to see where his story will lead. Timothée Chalamet delivers a standout performance in this role, setting the stage for future opportunities in his career.

Aside from Timothée, Marty Supreme boasts a strong set of characters who excel in their secondary roles. Kay Stone, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love, Iron Man 3), is a Hollywood actress stuck in a lackluster relationship with Milton Rockwell, played by Kevin O’Leary (Shark Tank, The Neighbors). Charmed by Marty’s smooth talk, Gwyneth’s character adds fuel to Marty’s mischief, creating a curious dynamic between them. Her acting and support of Marty make her the standout supporting character in the film. Milton, who serves as an antagonist in the movie, is the CEO of the pen manufacturer Rockwell, Inc. He comes off as a jerk towards Marty, who reciprocates, leading to intriguing dialogue between the two throughout the film. His previous work on Shark Tank showcases his blunt, no-nonsense approach.

Rachel Mizler, portrayed by Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser, Ghosts), is a childhood friend and seen as a mistress to Marty. While she may be the weakest actor in this ensemble, she does a commendable job in her role as Marty’s “fling,” despite being in another relationship and constantly following Marty around when he is in New York.

A Loose Inspiration

Marty Supreme is a film loosely inspired by real-life table tennis player Marty Reisman, an American champion known for his hustler lifestyle and playing for money. The movie pays homage to Marty’s colorful life, presenting it as a dramatic sports film rather than a biopic.

Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme excels in its cinematography and visual storytelling, drawing inspiration from Marty Reisman. The film was shot on 35mm film with vintage anamorphic lenses and then expanded onto 70mm film for a cinematic presentation. This choice gives the movie a visual style reminiscent of the 1950s while maintaining the level of detail needed for modern theaters.

The costumes in the film reflect the 1950s style, with Marty sporting various outfits including blazers, jackets, polo shirts, and, notably, tank tops. The clothing may appear loose on Marty, but it suits his character well and contributes to the retro feel of the film.

The Final Match

Marty Supreme is a fast-paced sports drama film set in the 1950s about a reckless table tennis prodigy whose life spirals into chaos in every direction. With a standout performance from Timothée Chalamet and impressive cinematography, it is a wild, character-driven ride and one of the best films of 2025.

An early screening provided for this review. Marty Supreme arrives in theaters on December 25, 2025. Fans can visit the official website for tickets and information.
