Since its announcement last year, this series has been highly anticipated. Did it live up to its amazing actors and the story based on the best-selling novels by Patricia Cornwell? Not exactly.
The show opens with Kay Scarpetta, played by Kidman, who has moved back to her hometown to support her family after a loss. This move puts her back in the position of Chief Medical Examiner for the second time, twenty-eight years later. Scarpetta became known in her career for solving a serial killer case in their small town during her previous tenure.
Upon her return, Scarpetta is faced with a murder case that bears a striking resemblance to the serial killer’s murders from twenty-eight years ago. She immediately begins questioning every detail and starts to revisit the case she solved years earlier.
While the series may seem like a typical crime or ‘whodunit’ genre, some viewers may be disappointed to find that it focuses more on character-driven drama, with the crime-solving aspect playing a supporting role. The show navigates the family relationships and character growth during 1998 and 2026, adding a layer of complexity executed with finesse.

With smooth transitions, past actors, and meticulously crafted sets that capture the essence of 1998, the show pays great attention to detail. The background music further enhances the storyline with its emotional connection to the characters and the story, using music from the ’90s to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
The acting in this series is top-notice, featuring an overall cast that includes well-known names that include some A-list actors who have been in the industry for decades. One standout performance is that of the past Kay Scarpetta, played by Rosy McEwen, who delivers a compelling portrayal of the character during 1998. This character is depicted as a strong, compassionate woman with clear boundaries and a fierce determination to do what is right.
An interesting aspect of the show is the portrayal of an artificial intelligence (AI) figure named AI Janet, played by Janet Montgomery. Scarpetta’s niece, Lucy Farinelli-Watson, creates AI Janet as a way to cope with the loss of her deceased wife and explores the complexities of human-AI relationships.
Despite its strengths, the show may surprise viewers with its slow-paced narrative, which focuses more on the Scarpetta family dynamics than on solving crimes. The dual timeline adds depth to the characters and their stories, making it worth watching for those who appreciate character development over fast-paced action.
The Final Mystery
Scarpetta is a unique series that offers a fresh take on the crime drama genre, with strong performances and a compelling storyline. If you enjoy character-driven dramas and are willing to embrace the slower pace of the show, you may find it to be a rewarding viewing experience. Plus, with actors like Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, what more could you ask for?
An early screening was provided for this review. Scarpetta arrives on Prime Video on March 11, 2026. Fans can visit the official website for more information.
