The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reunites Mario and his team, while introducing new faces and new trouble in the animated film across the galaxy. With improved visuals, a strong soundtrack, and a large ensemble cast, it’s already shaping up to be Illumination’s best film. However, the fast-paced story may leave you feeling like you’re zooming at over one hundred miles per hour.
In a Galaxy Not Too Far Away

The film begins in a galaxy where the audience is introduced to Rosalina, whose peaceful time with the Lumas is short-lived by Bowser Jr. and his minions. In trouble, one of the Lumas escapes to find Princess Peach, setting the story into motion. Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi encounter Yoshi, a long-awaited character to appear on the big-screen, a highlight that brings joy.
From there, the film rarely slows down and goes full throttle. Characters are frequently split into different groups, regrouped, and sent off again, creating a constant cycle that prioritizes speed over structure. This path allows for a variety of nostalgic pieces and action sequences, making the story feel thin and fragmented. For example, Peach and Toad leave with the Luma to find Rosalina, leaving Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi behind to solve any issues in the Mushroom Kingdom, then regroup at a new location after a few twists and turns along the way. Meanwhile, a variety of montage scenes are packed in between. The fast pacing can feel overwhelming at times, though it does encourage viewers to revisit the film to catch missing details and Easter eggs. The film focuses more on chaos and nostalgia than a deep narrative.
A Growing Cast

The Galaxy Movie gives a fair share of spotlight to its characters, more so with Mario and Peach. The relationship between the two is teased throughout the film but never fully explored, leaving their relationship undeveloped and shelved for another time. Though seeing Mario being teased by Luigi and Yoshi does bring some laughs.
Toad makes his appearance but is cast as more of a sidelined character as he shares most of his time as Peach’s sidekick. Yoshi stands out as one of the strong and charming presences in the film. Donald Glover as Yoshi does a great job to resemble the original video game, despite only saying one word but nails it in various tones. Illumination and Nintendo should keep him on for future film projects of the lovable green dinosaur. Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson, plays an important role but lacks enough screen time and her role feels similar to Luigi’s time in the 2023 film when he was captured by Bowser and his minions.
Bowser remains a comical highlight, though takes more of a supporting role as Bowser Jr. steps in as the main antagonist. While Bowser shows more emotional depth in this film, though teased, his lack of a musical moment feels like a missed opportunity given how memorable his song “Peaches” was in the previous film. However, Bowser’s bedtime story flashback with Bowser Jr. was a delight and full of laughs that showcased Bowser being a good father.
Overall, it’s a great cast of new and returning roles and if a third film or spin-off occurs, these same actors should reprise their roles. Kids and fans will enjoy their time with this sequel. It’s out of this world.
Fan Service Across the Galaxy

The film leans heavily into references, familiar enemies, and characters from other Nintendo franchises. Appearances such as Wart and his minions from Super Mario Bros. 2, and Fox McCloud from Star Fox broadens the universe, rewarding longtime fans. For those wondering how Fox comes in, it’s explained in a retro, comical way. Fox’s personality feels comical and serious, a similar feeling from Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon. A Star Fox spin-off should be the top request for many viewers. As for the classic Nintendo accessory, R.O.B. gives off a familiar personality from Flash Slothmore of Zootopia.
With so much fan service given, it can feel too distracting and crowded in its short theater runtime. Additionally, the film’s marketing lessened the surprise impact with its character surprises and trailers. If you enjoy a high-octane of nostalgia rush, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers a lot of that.
Picture Perfect

Visually, the animated film stands out. The colors and small details of each character are fabulous. The texture and debris on Yoshi’s saddle, Mario and Luigi’s detailed hats look great, and Illumination did a superb job on its visual presentation. All the worlds Mario and his team explore are vibrant and visually appealing, making each frame feel like a painting itself. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is portrayed as Illumination’s best visual animated film.
The soundtrack is equally as strong with Brian Tyler returning to compose the soundtrack. Bringing in and reorchestrating music from the famous Super Mario Galaxy video game scores and other Super Mario themes. There are some licensed songs, but it’s noticeably much less than what was in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Scores are more cosmic and emotional, fitting the film’s theme. Another wonderful soundtrack to add to your playlist.
The Final Star
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dazzles with stunning visuals, a cosmic soundtrack, and nostalgic fan service, but its fast pace and thin story keep it from reaching superstar status. While it may not fully land as a cohesive narrative, it remains a thrilling ride for fans and especially younger audiences.
