Another World is a visually stunning dark fantasy animated movie that dives between two worlds while exploring grief, forgiveness, and reincarnation. It does suffer from uneven pacing and confusing narrative moments, but its unique storytelling and memorable characters help make up for those shortcomings.

The Hong Kong animated film follows Gudo, a Soul Keeper whose job is to guide the souls of the dead toward reincarnation. Gudo encounters a young girl named Yuri and becomes intrigued with the emotions she carries for someone who has died. However, things turn upside down for Yuri as she finds herself on the verge of turning into a Wrath. Wraths are born from an evil seed that each human carries within and grows when a person’s unresolved anger, grief, and hatred are manifested. To prevent this catastrophe from occurring, Gudo embarks on a journey in the afterlife to help Yuri control her past and find peace. At the same time, Gudo is very curious about human emotions after meeting Yuri.

Gudo isn’t alone as he travels with a warrior type Soul Keeper named Dark Sky. Dark Sky carries a more personal and humorous tone but also approaches issues with Wraths on high alert. His skills as a warrior come in handy when facing Wraths and help carry the action throughout the film. The Goddess Mira, ruler of Another World where Soul Keepers like Gudo and Dark Sky live, oversees the cycle of reincarnation and watches over Gudo and Yuri. They make an interesting group of characters that carry large roles to support Gudo.

A Story Told Through Many Lives

Through Gudo’s journey, he learns about the complexities of human emotions: friendship, forgiveness, anger, vengeance, and the cycle of birth. Viewers are thrown into various stories as Gudo interacts with different humans throughout multiple lifetimes. The constant jumping between stories can be confusing at first, but the narrative gradually pieces itself together. Rather than following a straightforward timeline, the film reveals its themes through interconnected lives, creating a more impactful emotional payoff.

The animated film does carry fast-paced moments but several scenes feel stretched longer than necessary. As the film progresses, the pacing begins to drag, causing parts of the journey to lose its momentum. Trimming roughly 15 minutes from its 1 hour and 51 minute runtime would have resulted in a smoother overall experience.

Gore for the Eyes

Being a dark fantasy animated film, expect to see some gruesome moments. From arrows shooting at people’s heads to limbs flying through the air, the film does not hold back on its violence as blood colors the scene. With that, it certainly captures the emotional aftermath as it creates disturbing moments of humanity. Now it makes more sense why these evil seeds live deep within each human and puts the afterlife on high alert.

Wraths and Warriors

The fighting scenes, while not many, are energetic and fun to watch, blending 3D to capture the fast-paced fight sequences. With Dark Sky taking the lead, these scenes become both amusing and eye-catching thanks to his unique character design. His humanoid body features four arms, each capable of wielding weapons used to battle Wraths. To make him more distinguished, his headless head resembles a flame that changes color based on his emotion during battles. Both visually and in personality, Dark Sky stands out as a great secondary character. There were some small moments where the 3D models looked off, such as the wolves in the snowy mountains, but overall it worked quite well. All characters in the film were drawn with a rustic brush stroke that resembled a rough hand-drawn design, giving it that textured style.

Faces of the Afterlife

Goddess Mira gives off a gentle, graceful presence, while her design is that of a faceless statue wrapped in a single, long scarf and not nearly as detailed as Dark Sky and Gudo. As she animates, her movements are gentle and peaceful, fitting for a figure that oversees the afterlife.

As for the protagonist, Gudo’s child-sized stature gives him an immediate sense of friendliness and charm. As for the protagonist, Gudo’s child-sized stature gives him an immediate sense of friendliness and charm. He is dressed in black-and-white clothing and wears a decorative mask covered in circular ripple patterns. While not a fighter, Gudo possesses the ability to calm Wraths by showing them memories from their past through a simple touch. With his child-like curiosity and small stature, Gudo remains an engaging character to follow from beginning to end.

A Beautiful Afterlife

The landscape designs in the afterlife are very colorful and nowhere near the dark grays or fiery hellscapes one would think of the world after death. Landscapes are filled with endless forests, hills, and majestic waterfalls. It’s like a comfortable environment for those who died to relax before being reincarnated.

Music Beyond Death

The soundtrack captures the film’s themes using whimsical, orchestrated scores. Strings and piano are used throughout many emotional moments, particularly as Gudo begins to understand human emotions. Ambient textures and mystical melodies create calm, reflective moments while showcasing the afterlife’s vibrant landscapes. Heavier scores were used in the intense battles and worked to bring the intensity of the fight. With a variety of music styles, the soundtrack in Another World gives that fantasy feeling and elevates the emotional moments.

The Final Life

Another World is a visually stunning dark fantasy adventure that explores the complications of human emotion through creative world-building. It stumbles at times in its pacing and narrative, but the journey and beautiful animation make it a rewarding experience.

An early screening was provided for this review. Another World arrives in theaters on June 5, 2026. Fans can visit the official website for more information and ticket purchasing.
