The fist time PlayStation pulled this stunt on closing the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita’s PlayStation Stores was back in spring 2021 and received major backlash from customers, causing the company to postponed their decision. Well that time has come once again as PlayStation officially announced that the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita’s online PlayStation Store will be closing down in the coming months across the world.

Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications had the following to say on PlayStation.blog regarding why the stores is closing for these classic consoles:

As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required. We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.

With this closure, this means new content purchases will no longer be possible once the PlayStation Store closes on these devices. However, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future. It’s hard to know if and when PlayStation will pull that plug but at the very least re-downloading your The Misadventures of Tron Bonne game is still accessible. Below are the timeframes of the PlayStation Store closings:

  • Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
  • Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries – PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
  • In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

Players will have till then to make last-minute purchases on games before the online store closes on their consoles. We highly recommend picking up classic games that have a heavy price tag for physical editions or games you’ve enjoy that need DLC. Here’s a few titles we recommend:

  • Tokyo Jungle
  • Siren: Blood Curse
  • Infamous: Festival of Blood
  • Comet Crash
  • The House of the Dead 4
  • Fat Princess
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
  • Rain
  • Puppeteer
  • Drakengard 3 DLC
  • The Misadventures of Tron Bonne (PS1 Classic)
  • Mega Man Legends (PS1 Classic)
  • Mega Man Legs 2 (PS1 Classic)
  • Legend of Dragoon (PS1 Classic)
  • Xenogears (PS1 Classic)
  • Persona 2 (PS1 Classic)
  • Dino Crisis (PS1 Classic)
  • Dino Crisis (Ps1 Classic)
  • Breath of Fire III (PS1 Classic)
  • Breath of Fire IV (PS1 Classic)
  • Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1 Classic)

What other titles would you recommend picking up?

It’s a sad day for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita owners. Additional information and story can be found on the official PlayStation.Blog website.
