The Fix is an action thriller with some fantastic action sequences along with Liam Neeson’s outstanding performance and cinematography, but falls short due to pacing issues and complicated plot.

There’s a lot going on in The Fix. It has a heist, a rescue, flashbacks and present day action and a number of other subplots vying for attention. Each of these ideas might have been an interesting movie, but having them all together makes the story crowded and confusing.

Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List, The Naked Gun) who plays Larry, along with the star of the movie, Zachary Levi (Shazam!, Tangled), who plays Tucker, does a good job. In particular, Neeson is one of the good parts about the film. In the last few acts, he really brings the scenes to life. Unfortunately, his character is not the main character that the marketing makes him out to be. Instead, he’s portrayed as a supporting character.

Neeson is often seen in trailers and ads to help promote the film, so you might be surprised at how little screen time he gets in the movie. He’s important to the story but not as the main character. Though that does make it a little disappointing for those coming in expecting a more traditional Neeson action thriller since he’s absent for much of the film.

The acting is fine, but the film doesn’t give its characters time to develop any real relationships or emotional beats. The Fix can be tedious at times and pacing isn’t always helpful. Some scenes are drawn out and others jump from one part of the story to another so quickly it’s hard to get really settled in the story.

One of the great things in the film is the cinematography. The scenery provides us with some really nice shots, and adds some visual interest to the film that is lacking in some of the more routine sequences. The cinematography is mostly forgettable but when the movie utilizes its surroundings it looks pretty good.

Another highlight is the action. When The Fix gets going there are some enjoyable sequences which give the movie the energy it needs. But the film’s pace is too erratic to sustain the energy for the whole film. There are lengthy passages in between the action sequences where the narrative struggles to keep up its momentum.

The ending is one of the movie’s strengths. Neeson’s character has a bit more to do, and his presence adds more impact to the final act. And this is where the film is closest to the action thriller promised by its marketing.

Overall, there are a couple of working parts in The Fix. Liam Neeson does a good job and the action scenes bring some excitement too. The scenery is really well shot. The film’s issue is that it attempts too many things, none of which are done well. The end result is a film that has its moments of entertainment, but struggles to maintain its focus or leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

The Final Fix

The Fix is advertised as a high-octane Liam Neeson action flick, but it’s a lot more complicated of a movie than that. There are moments in the action and performances but the story is crowded and the pacing uneven and it’s hard to stay invested.
