When the first trailer of Sonic the Hedgehog first came out, fans have backlash the living daylights of the movie. Fans of the Sonic franchise weren’t too excited about the hedgehog’s design. Let alone how the trailer emphasized a lot of elements from the 1990s: Jim Carrey’s goofiness as Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik and using Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise. While the animation studio originally may have tried to go for a realistic look ended up being a backfire. The movie was originally slated to release in theaters on November 8, 2019.

With much backlash, the studio decided to make some modifications, pushing back the movie release to February 14, 2020. For a movie studio to redesign the blue hedgehog is a gutsy call, costing money and adding pressure to the animators.  After months of adjusting, Paramount and Sega released the next official trailer with the new hedgehog look. How does it far? Much better!

The new Sonic has the reconstructed face, a brighter blue fur, proportions don’t resemble a child in pajamas, wearing gloves, and redesigned sneakers. The new trailer showcases Sonic’s redesign, without the Gangsta’s Paradise, and feels like I’m watching the 1990s cartoon series. Though we can’t promise if the movie will actually be any good but a better Sonic that matches his original illustration is in the right direction.
