Spilled! is a relaxing, laid back indie game where players clean up pollution from the water. It’s a straightforward journey but a short one.
Time to Take Out the Trash
Spilled! puts players in the driver’s seat of a boat to clean up polluted messes caused by other boats. There are eight maps, each one bigger where players not only clean up oil spills but also pick up barrels, push in cans and bottles, and more. Along the way, there are critters stuck in oil that need assistance getting out. It’s a laid-back game where there’s no rush. It’s carefree and while there’s an end boss, there’s nothing to stress about taking it down.
Players can earn coins from returning oil spills and other polluted items. With your hard earned cash, you can upgrade your boat, such as its speed, cargo size to carry more oil spills, and a larger rake-like device to scoop up larger areas of pollution. The boat’s speed is tremendously slow, so boosting this up a bit at first will help speed up your snail boat. Eventually you’ll want to upgrade your other boat parts before going too far into the game.
A Short Errand
The game is very short to complete, taking only about an hour to finish the basic tasks. Each map unlocks when you reach a certain percentage of pollution cleaned up. While there is the option to clean 100% of the pollution on each map, it’s not necessary to complete the game. You can expect to reach 100% completion within three hours.
After achieving the game’s main objective, you have the opportunity to go back and revisit any areas you may have missed completing at 100%. However, if you use the game’s menu to go back to a specific map, the game will reset your progress, except for the prior map. Your upgrades will also be reset, as the game automatically sets up the necessary parts to navigate through the designated map. It’s a bit odd that the game doesn’t allow you to keep what you’ve earned and only resets if you choose to replay the game from the beginning as a “new game”.
When playing on the Steam Deck, the controls are simple and using an external controller poses no issues. However, maneuvering the crane to pick up barrels in the water can be a bit challenging, as players need to align it just right to successfully grab the barrels. It feels like playing a real-life crane game.
Beautiful Gunk
Spilled! is beautifully designed with vibrant pixels. There are layers of animation, from the movement of your boat to the critters swimming underneath. The music features some whimsical tracks but often feels absent while playing, and could use more attention here.
The Final Spill
Spilled! is a wholesome and refreshing game with its vibrant pixel design, perfect for when you need a break from it all. It may not be a long journey, but it is definitely a relaxing one.
