Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World is an anime series that features a compelling story with deep relationships. However, the series includes too many characters to keep track of, and some of those characters needed more time in the spotlight.

The Magic Begins

The series begins by showing us a baby being brought home and introduced to his big sister, Marie. Marie immediately loves him and wants to protect him. As he ages in this lower class noble family, his family begins to notice his adult-like maturity. Eventually the story reveals that this little noble is actually the reincarnated thirty year-old who dies on his birthday after thinking and being disappointed that he didn’t gain magical abilities since he is both now thirty AND a virgin. He immediately dies of a heart attack and is brought to his new life with his loving sister and parents who support him on his journey (though with few bumps along the way) towards learning magic in a magic-less world.

Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World is an animated series with a great storyline, depth of relationships, and fun ways that the main character, Shion, discovers magic in a magic-less world. Although some characters that were really good could’ve been utilized further in the series, it would’ve been difficult with so many characters being introduced. The first season ends in a way that feels complete so it is a question of whether it will come back for another season or if it will end right there. Regardless, this series is a wonderful and quick watch that will pull you in and make you fall in love with the characters and storyline.

A Magical Family Bond

The depth of the characters and love in the family is a common theme throughout the series as you see the main characters age. It is in love and connection with others that Shion is able to discover the use of magic and eventually develop it and even teach some of the people close to him how to use it. Not everyone has the ability to do magic but those that can pull it from within themselves and the nature around them.

It is in these relationships that we see Shion and his sister Marie get closer to each other. They protect and love each other with a bond that is far beyond a sibling relationship but a depth that can and does transcend time as they grow from children to teenagers. The way that Shion begins to experiment using his magical abilities is magical even in his failures because even in failure he is learning and that is meaningful. As he talks with his close family and friends, he is able to further work through different scenarios to find new ways to do his experiments. Though he is the most powerful of all who do magic since he is the one who has discovered the abilities, it is through these relationships that we see that none of them would be who they are or grow how they do without each other.

That being said, there are some characters like Grast the blacksmith that we are introduced to in a medium capacity where their connection ends up being a big part of the story. Despite the invention that they come up with that will eventually aid them in a large battle towards the end, Grast could be utilized as more than a good friend of the family and tool for Shion to make the invention. It would’ve been nice for them to be closer friends as you can see with Shion’s father and Grast.

Too Many to Handle

Nevertheless, it would have been difficult to include more depth with some of the characters since they gradually introduced more and more people throughout the series. It could be argued that there may have been too many. Even with the introduction of Dave and Huey, the guards that were kind of a letdown and eventually an okay support system weren’t really a necessary part as much as they were. The writers could have put more time into other character development by having fewer of these new acquaintances.

Season one does end on a positive and complete note but with enough there to continue the series to another season if the creators decide to do so. The characters, especially the main characters, are ones you will love and think about fondly when you think back on the anime.

The Final Magic

Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World doesn’t hit all the marks for the number of characters and incomplete feelings of character development where there is opportunity, the story and characters that are developed will stay close to your heart and you will be left wanting more of a good story with great people. It is definitely worth the watch… maybe more than one time at that.
