Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is a colorful, wild, and entertaining film for fans of the anime series to enjoy. Viewers may find it challenging to follow the fast-paced action, but overall, the flow of the film vibes well.

Chainsaw Man follows the story of Denji, an impoverished teenager who makes a contract that fuses his body with that of Pochita, the dog-like Chainsaw Devil, granting him the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws. Denji eventually joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government agency focused on combating Devils whenever they become a threat to Japan.
During the constant battles between devils and humans, a mysterious girl named Reze enters Denji’s life, pulling him into the most dangerous battle yet, where love becomes a weapon and survival follows no rules.
This movie takes one of the lesser arcs of Chainsaw Man and turns it into a visually stunning story that far overshadows what was originally on the page of the manga while keeping true to the artwork style.
The Reze Arc opens just like any anime season would, with animation clips alongside the opening theme song “Iris Out” performed by Kenshi Yonezu, who previously provided the opening song “Kick Back” for Chainsaw Man’s first season. Kenshi Yonezu also performs the ending theme song of the movie, “Jane Doe”. Kensuke Ushio also returns from the first season of the anime to compose the film’s music. It gives off a familiar vibe of watching a brand-new anime season.
Hit the Ground Running

The first thing viewers notice, who have seen season one, is the massive change in the artwork of the characters that Mappa Studios has done. Many manga readers, especially in Japan, are thrilled that the animation artwork style follows more closely to the manga writer and illustrator, Tatsuki Fujimoto, than the first season did. At the start of the film, the animation is done in a manga-art style and the ratio matches the manga page. It’s rare to utilize both the art and screen ratio. Pochita informs Denji not to open the door that resides in his mind but the movie never returns to this scene. More likely a scenario to happen after the movie and into a new season. As good as the scene looked, why was it included if it’s never going to be used in this film?
The movie starts right after the ending of season one, so viewers should watch (or even rewatch) season one to understand what the movie leads into, considering that there has been a three-year gap between the first season and the movie. That being said, Mappa Studios should keep this as a standalone film vs expanding it into a season like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train did. Hopefully Mappa Studios keeps the same animation artwork style in the film and carries it over into the next season of the series.
Lighting it Up

The presentation of this film is absolutely stunning. The visual language used to tell the story, along with the dialogue, is top-notch. Denji’s battle against the Bomb Devil, with its flashy graphics and striking cinematography, will leave you wanting more. However, the film ramps up the pace too quickly, making it challenging to follow the flow of the fights, despite their gorgeous appearance.
The silly humor of Denji, Reze, and the other Devil Hunters is hilarious. Their antics and dialogue will have viewers chuckling, especially when things spiral out of control. A warning label should accompany this film, cautioning viewers not to drink liquids while watching. The flashy graphics may cause eyes to water, as well as spillage during intense scenes.
The contrast in music between peaceful moments and intense combat scenes is executed wonderfully. The sound design and voice acting are on point. This film is a treat not only for the eyes but also for the ears.
The Final Cut
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is a must-see anime film that features engaging combat scenes, silly humor, top-tier visuals, and a captivating music score. It is a sharp spectacle that truly cuts deep.
