Marvel MaXimum Collection is a collection of six classic Marvel games along with additional variations, making it a total of thirteen playable game versions. It’s a time capsule of both the joys and frustrations these games brought back in the ‘90s. It’s a collection worth owning if you’re a Marvel classic arcade fan.

Welcome… to Die!

The collection features a variety of superhero titles such as The Avengers, Spider-Man, and X-Men. It includes six main entries along with variations from other platforms. For example, Spider-Man & Venom games come with both the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive). Other titles include the original 8-bit versions like the Silver Surfer and the portable versions of Spider-Man / X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge. It’s great to see these games include versions from multiple platforms for anyone who grew up with Marvel titles in the 1990s.

With only six entries, there’s a lot of other Marvel titles that didn’t make the list that we would have wished to see that aren’t from Capcom’s library. Games such as the Sega Genesis’ X-Men (1993), X-Men 2: Clone Wars, The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes, and the Sega CD version of The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin are noticeably absent. Licensing issues could have been an issue but stuffing the collection would have been a dream for Marvel game fans, even if some of those games have aged poorly.

The biggest feature on why you should pick up this collection is the 1992 arcade classic, X-Men: The Arcade Game. Originally developed and published by Konami, the game was made available for a short time digitally on the PlayStation 3. It turned out to be a lost game for players to play if you did not purchase the game in time before being pulled. The game makes a return in the latest collection and is coming soon into a physical format by Limited Run Games.

The arcade game still holds up quite well, especially with online cross-play support that allows players across platforms to team up. The other arcade cabinet Marvel games, Captain America and The Avengers, holds its own though not as strong compared to the X-Men arcade but does not offer online multiplayer and feels like a missed opportunity. Everything else is based on console games that were originally developed by western studios which bring nostalgia along with frustrating gameplay, especially the infamous Silver Surfer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. These games also don’t include online multiplayer gameplay and instead require offline co-op. The original scores and visuals remain intact without any adjustments to the actual gameplay.

Challenge Accepted

While these classic titles carry over existing gameplay difficulties, I don’t expect Limited Run Games and their team to fix them. Instead, the collection adds quality of life features to make playing easier. For example, infinite health and lives when playing Silver Surfer eases the pain to complete the game. Additional features such as rewinding, extra credits, adding CRT filters, and sidebar graphics are additional nice touches to make the experience more fruitful for everyone to enjoy. If that wasn’t enough, fans can look through the game’s history of sketches, notes, and a music player of the collection.

Marvel MaXimum Collection preserves an era of Marvel gaming that’s both thrilling and punishing, making it an easy recommendation for retro fans despite its rough edges. Trophy and achievement hunters will also appreciate that most goals remain achievable while having the “cheat” settings enabled.

The Final Life

Marvel MaXimum Collection delivers a nostalgic blast from Marvel’s past while adding quality-of-life features that make these challenging classics easier to enjoy. While some iconic titles are missing and several games show their age, it remains a rewarding collection for longtime Marvel fans.

A PlayStation 5 review code provided for this review. Marvel MaXimum Collection is available now for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam). Fans can visit the game’s official website for additional information and purchasing options, including the physical edition by Limited Run Games.
