In Good Hands

Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History - Collector's Edition

Fatal Fury has made a large impact in the fighting genre for video games since its arcade debut in 1991. Since then, it has introduced iconic characters over the years. Some, which you’ll recognize, made appearances in other games such as Super Smash Bros. and Street Fighter.

While it may not be as recognizable to the average gamer when compared to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Fatal Fury is a series video gamers should be aware of. This is where Bitmap Books’ in-depth history book becomes relevant.

Bitmap Books is known for its high-quality books, and its remarkable designs and material used make it feel like a premium product. We’ve had the opportunity to read Bitmap Books’ previous products such as the Game Boy: The Box Art Collection, PC Engine: The Box Art Collection, and one of my favorites, A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games. All of these products are enjoyable to hold and provide a good reading experience.

While we only have a digital version of this Fatal Fury history book, we can imagine that its quality is comparable to that of other Bitmap Books. The hardbacks are heavyweight and made with high-quality paper, which makes the graphics and illustrations pop. Typically, other Bitmap Books feature additional finishes like metallic foils, and we expect the same level of detail in this book.

The First Punch

Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History

With over 460 pages to go through, it covers a lot of history from the beginning of the series to its latest release of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Reading about how South Town, the primary fictional setting for the Fatal Fury universe, was inspired by real-world cities in the United States, such as Miami and Detroit, is fascinating. Interview quotes from Takashi Nishiyama, are interesting reads from the one who helped create Street Fighter and arcade cabinets. The book explains how Takashi Nishiyama started the popular franchise while working at Capcom and then left to work with SNK to create Fatal Fury.

The book goes into the development of each game, including lesser-known titles such as Fatal Fury: First Contact. The process of development from 2D to 3D is something that many gamers who played in the ‘90s would want to read about. The book includes additional challenges and interviews with developers and artists, including game designer Yasuyuki Oda.

While there are many stories to read, the book also contains many graphics associated with the franchise. Once through the history of the franchise, the book goes into a gallery of images. Concept sketches, screenshots, sprites, and advertisement prints. Some contain notes from the development and creative teams.

While the book covers the history of video games, there’s more than just the games. The Fatal Fury franchise had three anime features that became popular with anime and gamers. There was also a live-action film, manga, and merchandise. These pieces could have been added to the book to showcase how popular the franchise was. Even if it was two spreads.

The Final Round

Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History is a gorgeous and comprehensive celebration of SNK’s legendary fighting franchise, packed with developer insights, stunning artwork, and decades of gaming history. It misses out on other adaptations to discuss outside video games, but it’s a must-own book for Fatal Fury fans.

A digital copy of the book was provided for this article. Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History is available now on Bitmap Books. You can purchase the book or the Collector’s Edition while supplies last.
