Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is a meow-tastic expansion to the hit 2024 action role-playing game (RPG). It gives players another reason to return to their journey in Relink and go further with additional content.

A Long Preparation

The expansion takes place after the events of the Relink, where a new threat is brewing towards the Zegagrande Skydom. Mysterious gateways appear and a legendary foe returns. You’ll embark on a journey to find the truth behind the approaching “Endless Ragnarok” and to prevent the end of the skies. The expansion’s story isn’t long compared to the original campaign but serves a tasty dish for those coming back to the game with new features, content, and more.

Newcomers to the series must catch up before accessing Endless Ragnarok‘s new content. The expansion includes all necessary quests that prove many challenges to players. Even after purchasing the expansion, you won’t be able to start exploring the game right away until you meet certain requirements. Getting into Endless Ragnarok takes a significant time investment. I spent hours clearing the required Proud quests before the expansion finally opened up, but by then I understood the combat systems far better than I had expected. The new Conflux mode is excellent for helping players catch up before entering the expansion, as it allows them to level up their characters faster and get the rewards needed at the end of their exploration to increase their team’s stats.

It’ll turn you into a veteran player before you step into the game’s latest expansion. I just wish there weren’t so many requirements, like how many quests you have to complete before you can finally get to Endless Ragnarok. Once you get into the expansion the game becomes harder. Is the game challenging? Yes, but it doesn’t feel impossible, as it requires some level of skill and team equipment adjustments to make it work. The expansion feels more for veterans that want a challenge than general story-driven content, where you don’t have to grind much to complete.

Although character levels remain capped at 100, Endless Ragnarok introduces Master Levels, giving players a new way to continue strengthening their characters. Master Levels gave me another reason to keep improving my favorite characters after reaching Level 100, and the added progression made endgame quests feel more rewarding. Weapon Transcendence gave me worthwhile long-term goals beyond simply chasing better Sigils (equippable items to strengthen character skills and stats). I’d love to see these features available immediately before you unlock the expansion, but they act as a springboard to motivate players to get into the new content.

More Friends to Play

In the expansion, you will still control only one character, while the game’s CPU manages the other three characters. The game does a pretty excellent job of helping you out, but there are some battles that require more of the human element. The updated feature of playing with other players online has now made it easier with the crossplay capability. Now PlayStation users can play with PC and Switch 2 players together to take down enemies. This was one of the biggest requests, and Crygames delivered it.

I found that working with a team improved my chances of winning more challenging fights in quests than having the game control my characters. Occasionally the game takes a little longer to find online players to match the quests you are in, but it may take some tries before you finally land a team of online players. Additionally, players can borrow another player’s CPU-controlled character for quests if they need assistance outside online co-op battles.

Just like playing solo, you’ll control your main character to battle in. Depending on which character you choose from the game’s large roster, it is important to understand how to utilize that character’s abilities. Is the character a close-range attacker like the game’s protagonist or a spellcaster like Io? Get to know your fighter before playing, and you’ll enjoy the battle among others.

Summoning Greatness

Once players receive the Skyfarer Grade and complete the tutorial, they’ll have the opportunity to summon beasts into battle. This feature, which we sampled earlier this summer, truly adds a new dimension to the gameplay. While you can summon during Fatebreaker quests and within the Conflux, you cannot use them outside these events.

Players can equip up to four summons. Once your summon gauge is filled during battle and certain conditions are met, players can bring out their summon to help change the tide, such as activating a Skybound Art. Summons can also be used in co-op, and the gauge is shared between comrades. These summons can add buffs, heal, deal massive damage, and more. In battle, you can control your summoned beast to attack foes while your party disappears from the battlefield. Do as much damage as you can, as your summon is a timer before you and your comrades return. It’s a neat feature that adds more depth to its gameplay mechanics.

Additionally, your nonplayable character Lyria is able to call upon a larger summon called “Primal Beasts” to deliver a follow-up attack depending on the condition met. The same rules apply to summoning, where this special feature can only be done in Fatebreaker quests and within the Conflux. This cutscene showcases Lyia’s summon, and the best way to describe this feature is like summoning in the Final Fantasy series. Summon comes in to attack and leaves. Having both styles of summoning is fantastic, and I couldn’t ask for more.

Making Room for Improvement

The game feels like playing a massively multiplayer online (MMO) title thanks to its co-op capabilities and the HUD and UI. When first playing, the game can feel overwhelming with the interface and fast-paced battles. With the update, players can now adjust the game’s visuals to make it feel more approachable. Players can, for instance, turn off or auto-hide the HUD while exploring or battling. Players can also toggle status effect icons and ally damage numbers.

With the game, battles feel very flashy and highly animated, which personally makes it feel engaging and fun; some may still find it too intimidating. Having an additional option for this piece would be ideal for future updates.

While I enjoy the game’s visuals from the environments and character designs (some of the best illustrations in video games), enemies tend to feel revisited from the base game with new mechanics and higher difficulty during quests. Encounters remain fun but I’d like to see a greater variety of new enemy designs.

Many of the additions felt like direct responses to community feedback. Features like crossplay and HUD customization noticeably improve the overall experience. The development team’s willingness to listen and implement new additions and tweaks demonstrates their commitment to the game’s quality. Originally the development team was going to push out updates through the years, but they found that making one large expansion to help facilitate these updates and more content felt more reasonable. Adding big features of summoning to the little things, like visual interfaces, makes it a solid expansion of a strong RPG.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is a purrfect expansion that rewards dedicated players with new features such as summoning, crossplay, and quality-of-life improvements. Players will have a lengthy road to unlock the new content, but the journey is well worth it for fans who want a fun and challenging action RPG.
