As you explore, you’ll encounter a variety of monsters and you can decide if you want to befriend them. There’s over 500 monsters divided into eight families, such as slimes or dragons. Each monster will have one of nine ranks from G to X, a size of either small or large, as well as personalities. Personalities can determine the growth rate of their attributes, making it where identical monsters can develop differently.

When befriending a monster, use a “Show of Force” during battle to try and recruit them. If you defeat the monster in battle, sometimes that monster will ask to join. To have a more success rate of this scenario, players can use items too. Monsters can gain experience after every battle, accumulating enough to level up and at times earn Talent Points to learn new skills. Monsters can have up to three Talents.

When it comes to your monster’s size, they can take up slots in your party. Large monsters can take up two slots but they can have more Traits than small monsters and they can also perform more actions per turn. Giving benefits for monsters that take up space doesn’t sound so bad.

Once your monsters reach at least level 10, you can perform them as a parent for synthesis. Both parents (monsters) will disappear and leave behind a child monster that has the potential to become stronger than its predecessors and inherit their Talents. Some monsters are only obtainable through synthesis.

Synthesis can produce monsters with an attribute called a Plus Value. This value can grow high enough to learn a bonus oj its attributes that can become a higher rank than its parents. For example, if you take a mud mannequin that’s rank G and the jumping jackal that is rank E, you can product a well wisher monster that’s rank D. That’s not all, if you’re lucky you can product unexpected offspring that can’t be befriended. To get this unique monster, players will need to do some work on creating additional offsprings to then create more monsters. Results can vary and it’ll be some trial and error. The game offers a synthesis patterns chart to help track your results.

Withered World also introduces new monsters in the Dragon Quest world such as Slime Balls, Bamboo Badboy, and Groovy Grouse. Expect to see more surprises when the game releases this winter.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches on December 3, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
