We had the opportunity to do a short demo run of Dungeon Lurker during our time at PAX West. The game offers a retro dungeon exploration that’ll be on your radar for those who enjoy the Sega Genesis era.

Feeling Retro

Explore over thirty levels of dungeons as you travel and fight through enemies in Dungeon Lurker. Its overall style is inspired by classic action games from consoles and PC. The game gives the impression of being a 16-bit title, not only through its visual style but also in its animations. Your character moves in a sideways style that gives that retro feeling in this roguelike adventure.

The level designs are fantastic, with their attention to detail, especially in dungeon floors and how low-lit these rooms are. The limited colors also give it that ‘90s classic look. The lighting is perfect, and as you move, it highlights the surrounding details while the color adapts to the light. It’s one of the best-looking retro games, resembling a lost classic from that era.

Each area you take on requires players to defeat enemies before moving on. Enemies and players will move in all directions that showcase the battlefield in an angled overhead view. If you perish, you’ll have to run through the dungeon floors once more, but enemies and items will change up, which makes it a new challenge each time.

Engaging with enemies felt comfortable, and their encounters seemed justified based on my actions, whether correct or mistaken. Players can equip skills and magic to use to their advantage, but there’s a limit to how much you can use. There weren’t any challenges to understanding the mechanics, and it felt straightforward if you’ve played action platformer games. Observing enemy patterns before making aggressive moves was crucial for surviving these battles, which many platformer games do.

While it’s still early in its demo, Dungeon Lurker is looking to be a poised indie game to keep an eye on. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for a release date and additional platforms.

Dungeon Lurker is set to launch in the near future for PC (Steam). Fans can visit the game’s official website for additional information and purchasing options. We appreciate the Ukiyo Studios team for giving us the opportunity to test out their game at PAX West.
