Indie slice-of-life game Petal Runner looks to bring a laidback adventure for players when it arrives on PC (Steam) this year. The pixel-style game made its appearance at Summer Game Fest, showcasing its unique style, and we had a chance to play a short demo of it.

A Cozy Adventure Awaits

You’ll play as Cali with your fox sidekick Kira, two best friends as they explore the city of Sapphire Valley and train to become Petal Runners. Instead of battles like one particular franchise normally does, you’ll be making deliveries, playing minigames, and more in this wholesome story.

During our demo run, any confrontation we encounter throws you in a set of short minigames. It’s a familiar vibe to WarioWare-style games. Some require pushing a button repeatedly, such as controlling an animal feeding out of a bowl or moving your flashlight to scare away monsters approaching you. Beat these mini-games without spending all your hearts to proceed with the story. The game provides a joyful experience while playing a limited number of minigames, and hopefully, there will be a variety of them to enjoy.

In between, you’ll ride on your bicycle in the Downtown district of Sapphire Valley that gives off a cyberpunk feel with its pixel art designs and the dangers and missions you’ll encounter. Despite the game’s aesthetic, it still provides a wholesome experience that offers players something different to enjoy.

Players will also collect information on each creature they encounter, including a variety of designs and colors for each one. The setup gives a familiar vibe to monster collecting games like Pokémon and Digimon.

A Nostalgic Feel

The game’s story, dialogue, and script are amusing, providing entertainment through their goofy and sometimes corny lines. The game’s design features detailed pixel art with a limited color palette to offer that Game Boy era style, from characters to backgrounds. This unique look stands out even from a distance. The soundtrack uses chiptune tracks that give it more of that retro style.

Overall, Petal Runner feels like a cozy adventure with its soft set of colors, using nostalgic visuals and sound. With a short run of the game, I’m interested to see more of what it can deliver. The game is slated to release on Steam, but hopefully we’ll see Cali and Kira arrive on other platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch consoles, in the near future.

Petal Runner is set to launch in 2026 for PC (Steam). Fans can visit the game’s page on Steam for more information and purchasing options. We appreciate iam8bit giving us the opportunity to demo this retro-styled game at the Summer Game Fest.
