We had the opportunity to test out PM Studios and Skydance Games upcoming fighting game, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. It carries beautiful animation that resembles the popular animated series, and its battle mechanics are suitable for nearly any player’s skills.

Playing the demo, we didn’t get to dive into anything else but the freeplay mode to test out the game’s battle mechanics, animation, and roster differences. Eight playable characters were available to play, with an additional four to come before the game’s release in July. Announced recently, five additional fighters will be added in the “Year 1” DLC; expect to pay extra for the extended roster. To start a game with twelve feels light if you compare it to other fighting games. When you add the additional DLC, it’ll feel more like a more well-rounded set of characters.

Controlling each character uses the same mechanics when using the basic attacks: light, medium, heavy, special, throw, dash, and block. Then there’s the “Flow System” that utilizes special abilities that differ between each character. Aang’s wind abilities make him more mobile. Toph’s earthbending utilizes space, though slower when compared to Aang. Zuko carries close-combat fire attacks and sword techniques. Ultimately, the choice of character for initiating Flow attacks will depend on your personal comfort level. In terms of balance between characters, it was challenging to know how well the characters would fare between others during this early demo.

With the game mechanics straightforward, learning them is possible for just about anyone with some knowledge of fighting games. Utilizing character commands and mobility will take more time, and veterans of video games will find some enjoyment out of it.

Each fighter is tied to supporting characters. Players can choose a support character who can change the course of the match. For example, playing Aang with Appa as support can lead to more combo opportunities and offensive pressure. During our demo run with little knowledge on how the mechanics work outside the playable characters. Making it challenging to figure out how these side characters can adjust the tide of battle. Hopefully we’ll get more insight into how this mechanic works in your favor in the final game.

Fighting in Style

The animation style looks and feels fluid, closely resembling the art style and animation of the television series. Character illustrations are clean, and their flashy special effects look impressive when using Flow and other special attacks. Voice acting adds more value to the game, which feels more like a legitimate licensing game. Additionally, rollback netcode and full cross-play adds more value to the game’s experience. If you’re looking for a solid, straight-forward Avatar fighting game, then look no further with Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is set to launch on July 23, 2026 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam). The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions will launch later in the year. Fans can visit the game’s official website for more information and purchasing options. We appreciate Day of the Devs team for giving us the opportunity to test our battle skills at the Summer Game Fest.
